Liz Truss clashes with Keir Starmer in first PMQs as Prime Minister

Liz Truss clashes with Keir Starmer in first PMQs as Prime Minister: Truss gathered her new loyalist Cabinet to finalise plans to freeze soaring energy bills – as the Bank of England delivered a stark warning that inflation could hit 22 per cent without action. The PM plunged straight into tackling the crisis. Liz Truss crossed swords with the Labour leader over the cost-of-living crisis in the Commons the day after she was installed in Downing Street. She batted away pressure from Sir Keir for a bigger windfall tax on companies – but insisted she would not leave Britons and businesses to suffer the fallout from the standoff with Russia. ‘I will make sure that in our energy plan we will help to support businesses and people with the immediate price crisis, as well as making sure there are long-term supplies available,’ she told MPs. The exchanges came after Ms Truss gathered her new loyalist Cabinet to finalise plans for an energy bill freeze – and the Bank of England delivered a stark warning that inflation could hit 22 per cent without action.

  3. This is a disgrace!! She is disgusting, completely out of touch with reality. She's seriously advocating protecting energy firm profit and making working people pay over the coming decades with more vile tory austerity. It's literally unbelievable, they are human garbage

  4. We need a general election asap. We also need an investigation into corruption within the government, these payouts people are getting is just a way to put taxpayers money into the hands of these fuel giants. 100% garuentee most of these people have substantial investments into these companies, which should not be allowed. We desperately need a full reset of all MPs ASAP.

  5. To all the idiots that argue that higher wages lead to more inflation….there is no need to inject extra monies into the economy, just redistribute what is already out there….it's that simple, what is currently hoarded off shore and laundered through the likes of Ukraine is spread amongst a labour force that spends it in the local economy, generating business for people not invested in corporate greed.

  6. Would’ve been such a power move if the last thing the queen did before dying was to deny the conservatives to continue to form more governments that have done nothing but destroyed this country during the last years of her life

  7. Continuing to call Kier Starmer the leader of the “opposition” is becoming a practice that’s even more questionable than the so called pros of brexit

  8. I wonder how long it will take for Liz Truss to realise that thanks to her predecessors, she won’t be able to get by on technicalities, and selective phrasing for anywhere near as long as they’ve been allowed too in the past. Unfortunately for her, Boris Johnson relied so much on his ability to talk his way around the problems he caused that she may only have a few weeks before people start to wise up to it
