Barksdale Air Force Base (Barksdale AFB) (IATA: BAD, ICAO: KBAD, FAA LID: BAD) is a United States Air Force (USAF) base in Bossier Parish, Louisiana, in northwest Louisiana. Much of the base is within the city limits of Bossier City, Louisiana, along the base’s western and northwestern edge. Barksdale AFB occupies more than 22,000 acres (89 km2) east of Bossier City and along the southern edge of Interstate 20.[3] More than 15,000 active-duty and Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) members serve at Barksdale.

The host unit at Barksdale is the 2nd Bomb Wing (2 BW), the oldest bomb wing in the U.S. Air Force. It is assigned to the Air Force Global Strike Command’s (AFGSC) Eighth Air Force (8 AF). Equipped with about 44 B-52H Stratofortress bombers, 2 BW provides flexible, responsive global combat capability and trains all AFGSC and AFRC Boeing B-52 Stratofortress crews.

RAF Fairford is a Royal Air Force station in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. While being an RAF station, Fairford hosts United States Air Force personnel. Since 2019, the base has played host to a Lockheed U-2S Dragon Lady detachment from the 99th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron. It is the USAF’s only European airfield for heavy bombers and routinely supports Bomber Task Force (BTF) operations. Its most prominent use in recent years has been as an airfield for United States Air Force B-52s during the 2003 Iraq War, Operation Allied Force in 1999, and the first Gulf War in 1991.

RAF Fairford was the only TransOceanic Abort Landing site for NASA’s Space Shuttle in the UK. As well as having a sufficiently long runway for a shuttle landing (the runway is 3,045 m (9,990 ft) long), it also had NASA-trained fire and medical crews stationed on the airfield. The runway is rated with an unrestricted load-bearing capacity, meaning that it can support any aircraft with any type of load.

RAF Fairford is also the home of the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT), an annual air display. RIAT is one of the largest airshows in the world, with the 2003 show recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest military airshow ever, with an attendance of 535 aircraft.

  1. In 1991 we had 4 B-52s divert to RAF St Mawgan because of fog at Fairford. A few of my spotter friends had very special permission to look over the a/c. I was work that day. Two weeks later, I went to Fairford, and it was very similar weather to today, FOG.

  2. A day to remember! A late notice change of direction and streaming location due to the weather and this happened. A B-52 engine run followed by a U2 doing touch and go’s then a different U2 and B-52 landing. This is what the TCS brings, the unexpected! Nice one Ted and Nikos

  3. Absolutely fantastic stream, Nikos…. The B-52 engine test was a symphony to my ears… Then, the SR-71…amazing… and the icing on the day was the B-52 landing and 74.7K subscribers .. 👌👌
