They all were declared dead and no rescue effort was attempted since all the rescuers were rerouted on Destroyed Hoover Dam and flooded Las Vegas that was taken by another missile. Chinese conquered California and Oregon coast and were pushing towards Sierra Nevada mountains so a few miners underground were the least of United States Federation concerns. Pentagon AI rerouted all remaining forces to hold Sierra Nevada, rendering all the miners deceased. Yet, half a dozen survived. For months they were trying to dig out the destroyed mine using hand tools. When they ran out of food, they started to eat their deceased colleagues. Still one by one they died. Only one of them was still digging. His will to survive was strong because he remembered his wife and kids at home. He did not know that his home was long flooded by the Colorado river and was sitting under 20 feet of water. But he kept digging and one day he finally saw the light coming from the outside. The miner got out but because of cannibalism and over 1 year underground something mutated inside him and he became the first true zombie flesh eating monster. When he made it to his home he saw its roof covered with water and no sight of his family. He attacked Chinese soldiers who made it all the way to the flooded Colorado river and were building bunkers preparing for an anticipated United States Federation counter offensive. The miner attacked Chinese soldiers before he was shot and thrown to the river. That’s how the deadly zombie bacteria started spreading among Chinese invaders.
Chinese AI calculated that the outbreak cannot be contained and ordered a full pull back of Chinese forces. AI developed a cure for zombie bacteria fast and stopped the outbreak in its tracks in mainland China. However, American troops celebrating victory, retook conquered parts of the country too fast and zombie bacteria was spreading rapidly turning former soldiers into flesh eating zombies faster than treatment can be developed and implemented by American Medical AI and its dispatched teams of medics. Soon infected outnumbered humans 3 to 1 on the West Coast and were moving to central states and colossal rates. The Chinese destroyed the medical plants across many states thinking that it was Americans who unleashed a bioweapon on them to make China retreat and American AI could only administer cure to 1 in 50 infected. Soon it was all over for North America. In the official Chinese history it is still written that Americans deployed bioweapons near the Grand Canyon to prevent Chinese breaching it and caused the People Liberation Army to retreat back to China.

There were only a few survivors left. One family was time traveler relatives who survived in Canada. Infected zombies did not like the colder climate there and the most were retreating for winter while swarming Canadian towns in summer. That family built an underground bunker to shelter there in summer months and were mostly scavenging for food during fall, winter and spring months, when zombies were less numerous. There were five family members, grandfather, mother and father and two children: an 18 years old sister and 14 years brother. Four of them were going for food scavenger hunts. They were putting respirator masks to prevent bacteria entering their bodies, taking weapons and going outside, but the boy was too young to go to the world of ruins and zombies.
One day only three of his family members came back. Boy asked, "Where is grandpa?" His parents were silent and his sister told him, "Today, we went to the abandoned power plant to get new respirators to protect us from the bacteria. We did not expect to meet any zombies there because there is no food for them at the destroyed power plant. Suddenly at least a dozen zombie monsters attacked us from both sides. We fired everything he had at them. But one of them was at least an 8 feet tall monster, and no matter how many bullets we put at him, he kept moving at us. That monster was about to kill us all when grandpa jumped with an anti tank hand grenade at him and they both were blown away. Grandpa saved us all. He is a true hero. If not him, none of us would ever return home. Those are true monsters."
Boy said, "Oh, no grandpa. I want to avenge him. I want to join your team. I am strong enough and fast enough. I exercise everyday." Parents said, "Wait till you are sixteen years old."
Boy could not wait any longer. And at his 15th birthday when everyone left, he stole the key code for bunker lock, opened the steel door, put on his respirator mask and started climbing the stairs that lead outside the bunker into the house. First few minutes he could not see anything because everything was too bright for him. Then his eyes adjusted and he found himself in their family house. Boy saw several not familiar objects in the room and when he opened a closet he saw his parents' respirators, gas masks and weapons there. Surprised, he took one of the weapons and went on the street.
He did not see any ruins or zombies. Sun was shining brightly, driverless cars were rolling down the street, his neighbor's family was playing with drones with his daughter in their front yard and laughing. At the next moment the neighbor stopped paying and looked at the boy. The next moment he saw his sister running at him, she took the weapon from him and punched him with the weapon in the head.
The next moment the boy remembers, he found himself locked in the bunker with his head hurting. It was the moment when the boy realized that the world was not zombie infested ruins but a beautiful and sunny place full of life and technology that his family deprived him and stole 15 years of his life. He tried to open the bunker door again but the code was changed. He got enraged and started screaming and throwing things around.
Then he heard his parents' voices arguing upstairs. He also heard screams and fight sounds coming from upstairs. Then something started pounding the bunker door and it started breaking. The boy thought, "Are monsters real and trying to get into the bunker? Is it my last moments?"
Finally, a group of police broke into the bunker. They lifted the boy up into the house where he saw handcuffed parents and sister facing down the floor and crying.
Police took the boy and delivered to the city downtown. There he was facing AI. AI told the boy "Don't worry, you are safe now. We won't hurt you." Boy asked, "Why, why did everyone want to hurt me? Why am I still handcuffed? I did not do anything wrong?" AI told the boy, "Any life found to be in violation of Planetary Carbon Footprint Reduction Act approved by Beijing High Consul on June 1st, 2051, has to be eradicated. However, your case is unique. For 15 years you have not seen any modern technology, it makes you a perfect candidate for our time travel program to the past. Your brain is not affected by the global net, and with proper training you can find and deliver records and items we need with much better accuracy than average."
Boy was shocked, "What happened to my family?" AI answered, "Part 123 Paragraph 13 of Planetary Carbon Footprint Reduction Act clearly dictates: Any family that violates one child policy shall be irradiated. We confirmed your neighbor's report that a violation of this act occurred. I am powerless to change the law. It was already done at the Highest Federal Judge AI order. It includes you but I convinced the Highest Judge that because of unique circumstances you are the ideal candidate to past time travel program."
It was the moment when the boy realized that the world was not zombie infested ruins but a much worse place and that AI stole all his life. The boy completed the time travel program and went to the past. He became a time traveler whose stories I was telling you in my books. He told me that it is his last mission in his life and he is not coming back. He said that the best revenge on the AI who stole his family, who sacrificed their lives to protect him for 15 years, would be to have his story heard by as many people as possible. Although the future cannot be changed, hope dies last. I asked him why he simply would not stay in our time and never come back to his future world. He said, "Oh, yes I will for 18 hours more.
