  1. Being born in 1997, I'm too young to remember seeing these in stores, so the first time I saw these were in a display at a planetarium in the early 2000s, maybe just before Mars Mission came out. It was this elaborate display on a modeled surface of Mars. I know that they had more than just the core sets, but it's been so long that I don't remember if they filled the space with repeats, MOCs, or other LEGO space sets.

  2. Great vid Chris. Thanks for getting all those models together- Really good to see them like that and I agree about the ‘cooperation’ aspect.
Do you know, was that tube system used in any other Lego sets?
P.S. Thanks too to the guy who sponsored this.

  3. One little known fact about this set is that there are two versions! The one version has larger slots in the sand purple tube connecters, while the other used short tube slots. In addition, they had slight differences in some of the structural pieces. Another interesting thing to note, is that there was an entire audio series for this theme. The martians featured in the sets were getting the energy crystals on the surface, while the entirety of the martian culture was INSIDE mars. In the audio series, there is a bunch of rebel martians revolting and fighting against the martians featured in these sets and the astronauts helped to defeat these rebels. The red martian in the large aero tube set with the light turquoise skin was actually a spy for the rebel group. All very cool.

  4. I agree, this set helps promote a rather devious strategy that Lego of all companies should be cashing in on: the idea that each new purchase increases the play value of every other set in the line.

  5. I was too young when these came out but got the Aero Tube Hangar and the flying mech you didn’t show at an estate sale for really cheep, at pretty much the perfect age to enjoy them to the fullest. I’m missing a few of the martians but pretty much everything else is complete. I’ve always wished the theme had come out later so that I could have gotten the rest of the sets since they all looked so cool. It’s easily my favourite of LEGO’s original System themes.

  6. I don’t think the builds are juniorised at all. There were great. I still have some. Colors are great too. The sand colors made the builds not too bright. The human spaceship is a little disappointing because the whole middle part is just the plastic sheet on a frame

  7. Never owned any of the life on mars sets but I did win a framed Life on Mars mini fig that was aboard the ISS for a contest I had entered. I remember my mom said we had to drive down to the US so we could mail it from there because it would give me a better chance of wining the grand prize of a trip to Cape Canaveral. Ended up with 2nd place and got the framed lego mini fig. The grand prize had 6 winners but second place was 100 winners if i remember properly. Had to build a lego creation suitable for being on mars send in photos and write an essay on how it functioned.

  8. I remember fondly, when I was a kid (born 1995) In the store, they had built a big display with this tube system, I was so in love with it! My Godmother and mother then gifted it to me for my birthday, it must have been my 7th or so, and it was the best thing ever. Played a lot with my sister and I remember when I was just first year in school (turned 7 only few weeks after getting into the first year), and we learned the letters, and everybody had to bring something with that starting letter, I brought the one minifigure called "Cassiopeia" named after the constellation, and it was so weird, as all the other kids brought "normal" stuff, but not a Character named with the letter C. I really loved these, and I was so happy for it to have come out in my early age as it brought years of joy. I remember also seeing in old cathalogues the former aliens with that green transparent pieces, and I wanted a set of them, but they had been discontinued even then, and i begged my mother to call lego and ask if they still have it anywhere. Oh man these were the times. Seeing this makes me so nostalgic, I really need to rebuild this as soon as possible. 🙂

  9. Ya know, I came here to see what it would look like for the tan walker base to plug into the third tube and it's the one thing you didn't do! lol
It's good to remember the creative era of Lego where a richly-packed theme like this one was just another one-off among other richly-packed themes
