You should totally read Simu Liu's memoir, We Were Dreamers! He's from Harbin (also dongbei), and came to the US when he was five. In the book, he describes his complicated relationship with his parents and leaving corporate accounting to start a career as an Actor. In the book, he talks about healing his relationship with his parents and how in the end, things still worked out because of his parents' unconditional love. I also recommend Jimmy O Yang's book, How to American, which describes a similar story.
I will be going back to Shenyang, also my hometown, this December and look forward to perhaps checking out some of these cafes/bookstores you featured!
spent four years in Shenyang. miss the city very much – thanks Evelyn!! l really enjoy watching your vlogsπ§‘
Found your channel through one of your old vlogs of Shenyang (also my hometown) and still looks as pretty as ever. Good luck on the content creation grind
ur videos r getting me thru midterms. I love u!!!!
I'm an INFP, too. π₯° Gimbap is the best. π€€ I like the thoughts you shared on "home." π€
Girl homage to you for having the courage to quit the corporate job n embark on your own life journey β¦and so happy that your parents respect/tolerate your decision in the end:) I had very similar experiences with my asian parents (the job security, vegetarianismβ¦) n hence I havenβt returned home for so longβ¦but weβve been trying to reconnect these years π def will check out the books you recommend:) another book I fairly enjoyed about mother daughter relationship is The Things We Left Unsaid by Emma Kennedy π β€ cheers

Chinese parents are the same – I just feel like my parents always lie and not respect my wishes/privacies. Was just telling them again today.
I used to pedal boat on that lake with my parents in the 90s! I don't know if they still have them, but they were these swan-shaped boats and you could steer them by pedaling with your feet. So much nostalgia :')
Thank you for always being so candid and genuine with us β€ Wishing a long and healthy lives to your grandparents β€β€β€β€
parents are so difficult π thank you for sharing
Thank you angel for support Gaza children.
They don't deserve pain & lost all of their parent cause Zionist bombs
I am looking forward to your future vlogs!
I loove your videos! Theyβre so wholesome. Would love to see more vlogs of your life in China π keep up the great work!!
My mother-in-law (Chinese) also used to try sneak meat into my meals. Once I found out, she doesn't seem to do it anymore (I hope!) π
Yet another video that I relate to! I can empathize with your experiences when you discussed your family dynamics and relationships. Being the eldest child, particularly the eldest daughter in my family, I grew up under the weight of not just my parents' high expectations but also my own self-imposed standards. I tended to be quite hard on myself, and during my school years, I often believed that my sole noteworthy attribute was achieving top grades. Comparing myself to my siblings, I consistently held the highest grades, and anything below 80 would leave me feeling disheartened.
This mindset extended into my approach to work, where I felt an intense pressure to excel, secure the best job, and maximize my earnings. However, I eventually realized that this pursuit was taking a toll on my mental well-being. I had the fortunate opportunity to spend three years in China, primarily working part-time jobs (teaching does pay well in China!), and I had the chance to travel extensively each month. This lifestyle, which prioritized my happiness, felt worthwhile to me. Although my parents initially disagreed with my decision and repeatedly emphasized the importance of stability for the future, I believe they became less concerned when they saw me content with my life as it was.
I think this sentiment is shared by many Asian parents; they genuinely want the best for their children and strive to ensure that we are capable of looking after ourselves, even in their absence. Ultimately, though, what matters most to them, and most parents in general, is witnessing their children lead happy and fulfilling lives.
I now live at home with my big family, with four siblings together. Is it tough to have four grown adult children and parents at home? yes. but did our relationship improved over the years? definitely. Even if I move out in the future, I will always be grateful for these few years.
Your granma`s paintings are soo precious π₯°π₯°
loooove your vlogs. Surprisingly, you are a shenyangneseπ
jiejie youe chinese voice so so so soft hahahahha cute!!!! Btw I am new here are you a vegan eater?

As always, such a delicate and pure vlog. Thank you for sharing with us, Evelyn! Kissed from Brazil!
Appreciate the fundraising for the children affected. I've come across your channel a month ago, I love your videos. Keep posting<3
You are incredibly courageous and brave! π Your vlogs are like a beautiful piece of art, documenting your life as it unfolds. π₯ Your videos bring me so much comfort. πThank you for sharing your hometown with us!
I can truly sympathize with and relate to your story. I understand that the economy is going through a rough patch, and we are all facing uncertainties. But in this stressful world, it's important to find solace in doing things we genuinely enjoy, if possible. Personally, I had to move back in with my parents while searching for a job, so I can completely relate to your experiences. It can be tough not sharing important aspects of our lives with our parents and it can also be challenging when they don't respect our boundaries or choose to be dishonest. And you are totally right; our feelings are valid and we deserve to be surrounded by people who uplift and support us.πβ¨ Stay strong! πͺπ
Always remember to believe in yourself; I believe in you!π·
loved the editing and new format of a book review at the end π«π·
i resonate so much with what you said: just because you love each other doesn't mean the relationship isn't complicated. growing up in a traditional oriental household, the concept that your parents can do you no wrong was so deeply ingrained in me. it took me years as an adult to unlearn that concept. hope you get to heal π
Love the authenticity of your content. β€as someone who left corporate as well, this deeply resonates.
Not belonging anywhere and everywhere at the same time resonates with me on all levels. The guilt of being far from family, leaving and living in places that hold pieces of your story and feel like home – although they aren't anymore. Relationships. Growing up, growing into a new person as time passes by. As a person who literally devoured your content in the past week – I truly hope and wish for your YouTube journey to follow the path you are working for walking towards, because you do have more than one story to tell. And I want to hear them all. Thank you for sharing them with us β₯
Thank you for sharing your relationship with your mum. This is so common among Asian families, I experience this is some ways or more with my relationship with my mum. There is so much expectations Asian parents put on their kids, I feel comforted that you are still positive despite these complicated family relationships and is brave to made big decisions in life true to your belief. You are really and inspiration and also you put my feeling into words and help me to see things in a different light. Thank you.
you stay authentically true to your values, Evelyn! I've learnt so much from you <3
I really resonate with your relationship with your parents especially your mom. Iβm Indian and Asian culture is traditionally so tough when it cones to family relationships in my experience. Guve yourself a hug for being so brave and talking about your relationships on the internet! β€ Thanks for sharing the books.
Wow. Your grandmother is a good painter!
You are not supposed to break your chopsticks over your soup! lol. Do you want tongue splinters? π
Where did you rent the boat? (Hou Hai?)
The 'guest in your own home' feeling never goes away once the world becomes your playground… There are pros and cons to that.
I really love your videos and I think the more you make videos on a regular basis the more subscribers and viewers and brand deals you will have. I have been watching YouTube for a long time, and I really think your content is lovely. xxxx
Love the honesty.
your videos are so comforting ^^. im trying to start a side hustle myself aswell, so i love to see someone share their experience. take care!!
i loved this video and seeing Shenyang, and your style of vlogging is so wholesome and comforting. Thank you for sharing your hometown and life with us!xxx
Thank you for talking and opening up to us. i feel like with the mom situation I can definitely relate, I've been a vegetarian for 10 years now and have been on a plant-based journey for a year, mine also tries to "sneak" dairy in everything then lie, so I get that betrayal feeling. i hope your channel grows more so we can enjoy more of your journey and experiences. you've got this!β€
Hi, your new subscriber here. I have been watching some of videos for a while and I love the realness of your life and video content. I applaud your decision to leave a well-paying corporate job to chase after your dreams. Whatever it is, it takes a lot for one to get out of their comfort zone and the security of a monthly paycheck to explore a future unknown. I was retrenched when covid hits but I'm lucky to be able to get a package and took some time off from everything to recover my burnt-out soul. I am now in a much better place mentally so I truly feel that it's a sign from the universe telling me to take time off to rethink about my life and heal. So…… whatever it is, that you've followed your gut and went along to make it happen, everything will definitely work out for the better.
Really glad your channel got recommended to me. I really like your calming voice and u have a good personality
omg at the kitty's noises X)
I randomly started watching your video ( this is the 2nd one). Just wanna drop you a note that you are not alone in your relationship with your mom, perhaps it is rather common to a lot of us out there. it could be discouraging, but definitely keep sticking with your own choice, belief and preference; just strike for a better balance in between. ε ζ²Ή
Your vlogs are so healing.
Also I'm curious, how "easy" is it to do things by yourself in China? Like going to diner alone etc. I know I had no problem in Japan but in Korea I got very self conscious
Iβm so glad Melissa recommended your channel. It feels like such a safe space and I love the way you vlog. Itβs very inspiring π€
