October 1944 – While the Japanese Centre Force has been temporarily turned away, Southern Force enters the Surigao Strait. Defending the American landings at Leyte, the Battleships of US Navy 7th Fleet stand in their way, in what will be the last Battleship vs Battleship engagement in history.

  2. I like the comment: "Oldendorf's warships are all that stand between the Japanese southern force and the allied landings." 🤣

    True. All Oldendorf had was a vastly larger force, an advantageous geographical position, foreknowledge of his enemies' position, and a well-laid ambush. If it wasn't for that, the allied landings would have been defenseless.

  4. Just imagine the sense of vindication and elation those Pearl Harbor veteran ship crews must have felt on this night. To be able to unleash so much firepower against an enemy that they had fought so hard for so long, in such a decisive battle must have felt incredible.

  5. My grandfather was the ship's doctor on USS Melvin. He was the ship's historian until he died and this is 100% consistent with his account. He maintained the Melvin was the only destroyer to singlehandedly sink a battleship in history.
