Lego's Coolest Combination Model

Today we’re taking a look at one of my personal favorite aspects of Lego that I feel doesn’t get a ton of focus, combination and alternate builds! In particular there’s one combination model from the Power Miners series that I really want to focus on, but since it’s such a fun topic, I wanted to talk about them as a whole too!

  1. The earliest "official" combination model I am aware of is the Blacktron Super Vehicle from the late 1980s, where you specifically ordered the instructions via catalogue to assemble 3 of the existing sets from that line together. I definitely remember a lot of combination models in the Lego magazine from the 1990s and 2000s, but I don't think I had the specific 2 sets to build any of the combinations I saw

  2. Always a good day to see a new big yellow video, sometimes it’s about lego, sometimes some random fighting game character or mechanic, or sometimes it’s about how gen 1 Pokémon fails to not bug out… but every time it’s a 15-40 minute video that’s whole vibe is “here is the random ass thing about something you more then likely haven’t thought about or care about but I’m gonna tell you why it’s coolest shit ever”… and damnit I’m on board 🙂

  3. the absolute best thing about Gaardus is that his role in the lore was breaking the Red Star (the thing that reconstructs and revives dead members of the Matoran Universe). pretty fuckin meta, i have to say.

  4. Oh shit I remember making fused monstrosities with the 3 Bionicles I had as a kid. Just making 3 headed sixed armed units that could fight from any angle. I miss those days.

  5. My life has been nothing but LEGO for the last two weeks. I'm helping my mom clear out her closet of our old sets and I've been scrounging for pieces. Sometimes extra pieces included for combination models screw up my brick counts, but thank fuck for bricklink and toysperiod.

  6. Way back when I built all three of these and also put all the remaining pieces back together in this weird 4th model, which was kind of mostly leftovers from the Crawler really, it looked like a very silly top-heavy tractor

  7. What do you think of the Lego Creator 3 in 1 sets? I mostly only buy those rn because I am not interested in lego stuff based on franchises but I like them a decent bit. A lot of sets have the issue where it feels like there is no reason to build anything other than the front boxart build though

  8. I’m absolutely here for all the Rock Raiders love! ❤️😉
Power Miners is absolutely noteworthy in their promotion of alternate builds and combiner models during an era where that simply wasn’t the norm. The Crystal Crawler has always been an idol of mine and you do it such justice here! I’m also really loving that Granite Grinder alt build (modified) as well – I’m gonna need to grab a second copy of that set to build it!

  9. @16:30 the instructions on the rubble dozer car actually show that they only call for the stickered element on one side. There is a stickered 1×4 flat plate on the visible side and 2 1×2 flat plates are used on the nin-visible side.

  10. Gracious, preeetty sure I made those Slizers Throwbot combos; at the least, that second one's big ol' eggy head is tactly familiar.
Really need to dig out the Technic-pieced models I've kept around for a photoshoot~

  11. I am genuinely shocked there are no power rangers combination models (unless the wiki I read was wrong.)

They are literally the IRL embodiment of Megazords.

  12. Absolutely amazing video!
Bonkle combiners can honestly be very hit and miss, but I find existence of regional combiners really interesting; there is a number of Japanese inspiration models that were also covered by Eljay. Then there is what I call "Irnakk's husband" which was sold alongside non-special version of Irnakk in Korea; I assume that it was an older design that was largely scrapped in favour of Protodax.
But, yes, its a shame that people ignore combiners when Lego's, y'know, about putting things together in various combinations.

  13. as a kid I put like 8 Hero Factory sets together to make some fucked up giant monster. I then had a “fight scene” with it that resulted in me slamming it into a table so hard that like 3 pieces broke, rather solid ones at that. i learned to be gentle with my toys that day…
