Why would anyone put lego in sand? Its gonna be in there for a while. I was also at a park once and found lego pieces in the dirt.

I have easily over a hundred of these old style rubber wheels and many in good but also some in this bad condition. I think the rubber they used in some of the production runs simply becomes dry and breaks down after 50/60 years

I don't think it is sand. I think some of the rubber is just wearing down. I have some I know weren't in a sandpit.

I think the joints on mixels i broke (namley the joints for like volectro and zorch and i think some clip connections)

I have seen many of those wheel pieces with the rubber gone dry. When I was in the scouts they had those pieces in the Lego box
My grandpa has a whole box of those old Lego pieces from 1960 (I think 1960?) and some of the old minifigures with the spherical heads and those weird ears.
