You guys are either disingenuous or delusional regarding the protected rivalry question. The overriding concern of protecting the three they did was to cling to as many weak B1G West opponents as possible for the remainder of Ferentz's career rather than expose his last-century style of football to the west coast team additions as well as the 3 decent programs in the historical league. To wit: in 2024 Iowa (typically) only played 3 ranked teams all season and lost them all by a combined score of 92-0. The halcyon days of playing 80% of your conference schedule against seriously weak opposition are over. That golden carriage is about to turn back into a pumpkin.
