  1. I have said before, and i will say again, singapore joined malaya in order to balance out the racial composition of malaysia, and malaysia in 1963 kicked singapore out due entirely to the fact that singapore consisted of majority chinese, and it was threatening the power of the malay supremacist hold of the federal government then.

And thus singapore was ejected from malaysia…..

I ask anyone, why would a government, any government at all, would reject and eject any piece of territory from its control? Countries goes to war over worthless piece of a remote rock in the middle of nowhere, but back in 1963, a whole piece of "rock" was voluntary ejected from direct control by malaysia.

Therefore, to singaporeans who advocated for a military strong singapore because they're afraid of military invasion by malaysia, chill man, chill. Malaysia will not even want to invade singapore to incorporate singapore back into malaysia because the reason singapore was kicked out is also the reason singapore will not be invaded: the majority ethnic chinese population.

You think the malaysian government can handle an addition of 4 million plus ethnic chinese into its fold? That's a laugh.

  2. Concentrated power is most often bad because probabilistically most authoritarians are unworthy of the power they wield. But once in a generation you come across an exception and when you do the results can be spectacular.

  3. While I truly admire what Lee was able to accomplish for Singapore, the major glaring issue with allowing a political party or the federal govt the legal authority to interfere with the basic rights of common citizens, private business, etc… is inevitably over time these powers will be abused & the level of abuse will continuously grow getting worse. As time moves forward generationally this will lead to full blown authoritarianism & major violations of human rights.

Because, based on what is shown here, the federal powers granted lacks effective public backed opposition or any true forms of checks & balances there's nothing preventing the crawl further into authoritarianism & abuse. A country can not rely upon or simply expect the same level of benevolence by those who come after Lee as the system is essentially setup to be abused. IMO within 6 generations at most Singapore will be an authoritarian shadow of Lee's time if a serious govt restructuring doesn't occur. We likely won't see it soon due to the current level of comfort enjoyed by the common citizens.

Again, I admire what Lee was able to do for Singapore. Absolutely incredible & he deserves that credit. It's just looking forward that I worry. I hope I'm wrong but it seems very likely.

  4. Honestly, he sounds like a great ruler, I wouldn't trust any ruler that claims to never do bad things for the sake of the nation, either is lying and is just an hypocrite (maybe a psychopath too) or is a fool who doesn't understand the human mind. Was he perfect or the ideal rule every country should aim to have? No, the fact we can find flaws in his policies shows he wasn't perfect, but I would rather pick him over 97% of the current world leaders we have.

  5. There's nothing controversial about LKY except in the minds of colonialist nations.
He's simply one of the greatest leaders ever, and he was a yellow man who dared stand up to the white man, thus the "controversial" part

  6. "Disneyland with the death penalty", a lot of city states, including European ones, can be quite like that, though Singapore is an extreme of surveillance state. I don't like that Singapore is expanding its land with plundered sand from poor countries like Myanmar. It seems immoral, mercantile, uncaring.

  7. At 12:20 you missed the fact that the referendum was deliberately written and designed to mislead the voter, and that all three options were essentially the same. The Barisan was protesting that aspect of the referendum, not the results.

  8. Ferdinand Marcos Sr of the Philippines tried to copy Lee. But Lee wasn't a thief. Marcos and Imelda – parents of now Philippine president Bong Bong Marcos were voracious crocodiles

  9. What father? Whose father? Yours? U dummies don't even know that he was responsible for the 2 child family policies and in cases both had to be forcer fully sterilized after 2 kids. U folks know why every 10 people u meet on the streets as many as 6.5 are foreigners. Such grave mistakes

  10. Singapore is an incredible country with diverse and rich culture. This is all testimony to Lee and the Singaporean people. As an Australian it is good to have Singapore as a close and friendly neighbour.

  11. There was no oppressive law. That is what Western politicians & MSM dream up. In facts 90% of all our laws was inherited from the British penal code. Thus, if you say our country is oppressed than the UK an monarchy democracy is oppressive too. The biggest problem is the Western mind. Let me throw you this question do you think your protests on the streets changes any government policies….the answer is no it it's the powerful corporations, institutions & individuals that actually has more influence than the man on the street. It's the West that got to wakeup. Western govt spins facts & constantly lie to thier own citizens so does the Westerns MSM…such Irony.

  12. Let me use the analogy of taking an examination. If All the politicians in the were were to evaluated for thier performance in governance of thier county. Than LKY would have gotten a distinction. 70-75/100 marks. Humans are Ironical creatures. Too much good they complaint too little good they also complain. Thus, stop complaining, You need to help yourself by constant learning & improvement. The minute you stop you move back work it's like exercise & balance of your lifestyle too much of one good thing will kill you.

  13. When it comes to child policies in already authoritarian countries why don’t they make it more flexible. As in a certain number of children are encouraged (ex 2) and the parents must go in front of a board to ask for an exception. If the board ascertains the motivations of the parents (ex can you afford to give those children the equal lifestyle of the children in the rest of the country, do want more children to avoid hiring a laborer, is for religious motivations, do they lack education on birth control or do they just want a brood of children) a conversation could easily figure out if the couple wanted children for improper reason (ex using as free labor or a strange religious faction that wants to overrun other cultures with more born-in converts) and the family can be educated or helped to better themselves financially and then have more children.

The question is: what do you do with the parents that are denied and choose not to comply for problematic reasons.

  14. The guy was a dictator. Singapore is for all intents and purposes a one party state. It has a ruling party mindset. There is very little freedom of speech, association, assembly, choice or the press in that backward little country. As William Gibson's Article by the same name points out: Singapore: Disneyland with the death penalty.
