  1. I remember, when I was a kid, this guy on our TV laughing fit to burst about something and my Dad laughing along with him.
I was in shock cause my dad never laughed about anything.
If his loved ones read this Pax.

  2. What an interesting piece. I'll admit, I wasn't familiar with the man, but to have lived his life and not seek out recognition – in fact, the opposite, "to impact women & children who'll never know ya' name." you sound alright to me, Mark Shields. 💙

  3. Thank you, Lawrence. You are too modest to admit it but there is a great deal of both Mark Shields and Mike Mansfield in you. Unfortunately for the U.S.,Mansfield 's generosity of spirit re: the GOP in 1965 would make him a target of Moscow Mitch and the GOP Fascists today. The few honourable political leaders who have not and cannot be bought or bullied into betraying voters can be counted on one hand. The GOP has stamped out the ethic of honour, mutuality, and "good faith argument" that are essential to putting the People, the Country, and fidelity to Constitutional Democracy above Party and personal gain. America faces its own Munich right now and the Dems' instinct is toward appeasement because they have failed to learn the lesson of 1938: Fascists cannot ever be appeased. They see honour as meaningless, mutuality as absurd, and fidelity to Constitutional Democracy as weakness. America needs a resurgence of classic political values IN BOTH MAJOR PARTIES if Democracy is ever to become a reality, rather than an unachieved aspiration. With Mark Shields gone, you, Bob Reich, Bernie Sanders, Jerry Nadler, Bennie Thompson, Katie Porter, AOC, Stacey Abrams, and an impressive group of women in State Legislatures are America's last, best hope. A few Republicans like Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger are doing much to rescue the GOP from Trumpism but it would take a massive turn-about at the level of the GOP leadership to clean the Augean Stables of Trumpist corruption. I do not see that happening between now and November. All that can prevent an American Munich is a 50 State DEMOCRATIC Sweep of Local, State and Federal seats. Dems and Progressive Independents must rally to run for office and VOTE IN RECORD NUMBERS NO MATTER HOW HARD THAT MAY BE to put an end to Trumpism in Government. The DOJ will not rescue Democracy; only Voters and Non-Corporate Dems and Independents can do that. Keep on keeping on, Lawrence. You do make a difference.

  4. Kennedy wasn't the "last tough Liberal this country ever had", It's just now we s**t on and demonize them. AOC is the latest young blood "tough Liberal"… But, just look at how she is treated. .. Not least of all, because she is female.
The US has a real issue with strong-man /Mad men politics.. and until we shake that culture. we will never solve our social problems.

  5. (TV series).
A show trial is a public trial in which the judicial authorities have already determined the guilt or innocence of the defendant. The actual trial has as its only goal the presentation of both the accusation and the verdict to the public so they will serve as both an impressive example and a warning to other would-be dissidents or transgressors.[2]

People's Court in Nazi Germany. Trial of Adolf Reichwein, 1944. He was sentenced to death and became the victim of judicial murder.[1]
