Actually, as long as Trump assert that the action is not criminal, it is not admittance of criminal intent, just intent.
Criminal intent requires the person to know it is illegal and perform the action nevertheless. So as long as he maintains and we cannot prove otherwise that he believes it is legal, it is not criminal intent.
That said, a crime does not always require criminal intent. In most case it does not. We all know the saying of ignorance of the law is no defense, but ignorance of the law inherently means no criminal intent.
But I do think it important to get the terminology right. Trump have admitted to knowledge and intent, but not criminal intent. Let's not bend facts like certain people.
No, I'm no lawyer. But as I suspected this might be the case, I did look it up prior to writing this comment.

Not sure if you covered it, but he also implied that he knew the documents contained sensitive classified information by saying he had "secret service agents guarding it," so the line of defense that he didn't know the documents were classified or that he didn't know the boxes contained sensitive material, is out the window as well.
