Orchestre Du Midi (Korg Synthi) Georg Lawall
This is a new documentation of symphonic compositions that where not played with real instruments, but should!
Most of Lawalls Symphonies are arrangements of other works and the fact, that the freelancer had no patience to deal with the burocratic structures of big orchestras is responsible for not having those works performed. So we only have the composers PC Midi versions, which are somewhat limited soundwise but still are perfect reproductions of the scores.
This first symphony is a reduction of the oratoric work AM ANFANG WAR … which was commisioned for the opening of the new musicschool in Sindelfingen in 1986, in those times the richest town in Germany, because Mercedes Benz was located there. There is a version that mixes the OREXIS Studio recording with the orchestraversion of the premier in 1986. The idea was to demonstrate the evolution of music and instruments and bring all teachers and advanced students on stage! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X36hXjfJn8E
LOS PASOS PERDIDOS follows the novel of cuban author and musicologist Alejo Carpentier. It tells the story of an american composer of commercial music who is send to the Amazonas to investigate and gather native instruments and music for a museum. The first movement shows his arrival and his way into the rainforest. The midi orchestra cannot produce the flageoletts and stroked chords of the two guitars and not the high violinstrings beaten with chopsticks to immitate the native percussion instrument Berimbao. He falls in love with a native woman of great wisdom which lives in perfect harmony with the moon (2nd movement) This inspires him to write a great and deep symphony but he has not enough paper to complete it (3rd movement). So he decides to go back, clear his affaires and return to live with here forever. But it takes time to get rid of the bonds and when he returns, he doesn’t find the paths and the beloved woman anymore (last movement). He learns that she has children with another man later. So he lives in memory of the lost. Lawall asks in the score to play a tape of the berimbao sequence backword and the original music vanishes in this memory.
