Laurence The Worst Vicar (Part 1) [Bloodborne Lore]

Laurence, the founder of Yharnam’s Healing Church, is one of Bloodborne’s most important characters, despite having almost no screen time or dialogue. In this episode, Sophie and Sin explore the events of Laurence’s life, from Byrgenwerth to the Healing Church to Cainhurst.

Once the events of Laurence’s life are laid out, Part 2 will discuss Laurence’s character, motivations, and how his approach to science and enlightenment differed from that of Byrgenwerth.

  2. I disagree on the conclusion that Willem never achieved anything. By his metric, he aimed to gather knowledge and insight and he was clearly doing that, and the Byrgenwerth enemies are using abilities that the church cleric and hunters did not possess. And we ascend through the process Willem sets out. Using the cords was his idea, we literally take one off him.

  3. Thanks, I always enjoy your content, its a perfect balance of fun and actual information. Sophie truly is a Bloodborne historian and Sin is truly a great mediator. Still baffled you guys dont get more coverage, but as it goes with true knowledge – you have to seek it proactively yourself, it wont get fed to you. KEEEP UPP!

  4. What Sophie says about Laurence and Willem being fundamentally incapable of understanding that it's not only a biological relationship between a parent and a child that makes ascension into a great one possible, but also an emotional bond, is a very beautiful way to put it, and also accurate. Our character takes in the knowledge from three cords, which show the biological part, but then we also have the Doll, who gives our character the emotional part of the relationship. Those put together leads to our character ascending. Laurence and Willem had the tools to succeed, but they only saw children as a bunch of genes. Rom becomes vacuous, just a husk, because there's no "love" there, only the genetical makings of a Great One.

Mergo seems to be a successful Great One, as it has the right DNA and a loving mother. It would have been interesting to see what happens to Ariana's child, as it seems unlikely that Ariana could show it love. I'm probably overthinking this, it probably doesn't go that deep, but I really like the concept.

  5. I love your long videos so much!! The short ones are great for my commute, but I love really getting into a deep lore hole with y’all’s analysis. Plus your rapport and humor really cheers me up!

  7. I think it's interesting that we get characters in from games that aren't always our main antagonists but they're heavily connected to the things we fight our way through.

Marika got to remake the world in her image and decided to break it later and we pick up the pieces.

Gwyn had a fear and revulsion of humanity and darkness and many groups and cultures throughout ds1 and 3 are defined by how they view Gwyn's age and how they respond to it ending.

Laurence created the healing church which itself does somewhat function as our antagonists in bloodborne as well as they themselves and many of their actions forming Laurence's ultimate legacy. A legacy that's eventually going to be comparatively indistinguishable through the passing of time among civilizations that came before and will continue to come and go.

  9. I always thought the clerics got bigger transformations just because they took in a lot more blood, but repressing it makes sense considering how sudden the people-to-beast transformations always are

  10. Awesome vid as always.

I would like to get more depth about why Laurence leaves the Healing Church. What's the evidence supporting Sophie's theory about the game/lore subtly telling you that he left?

  11. Also, very beautiful conclusion at the end. Motherhood is the key of all keys in this story. Miyazaki told us that Great Ones not being able to retain childs is an analogy of current socieconomy where, the more busy you are with responsabilities and stuff (labour basically), the less capable of having a family you become. The Great Ones became so important and ascended that they sacrificed their hability to mantain their children. And they want it more than anything. Being able to fix that is what ends the Hunter's Nightmare and what makes you destroy the Moon Pressence (the cords for the insight + the blood echoes for the Moon Pressence + the bound with the Doll).

  12. It feels weird to refer to the brutal killing the Hunter does as "healing", but when you look at the end of orphan of kos, returning Ludwig to his former glory, beating maria and relieving the doll's memories, freeing Gehrman, and killing the embodiment of Laurences sin, a lot of what we do is acts of mercy, undoing past mistakes and putting anguished souls to rest. By the end, we have presumably restored balance to the Great Ones by putting a stop to the church's meddling.
