Its honestly pretty easy to keep Staf alive in this mission if you just avoid leaving him on the frontline after he attacks and have him move him with a squad that isent made out of papper.
all you had to do to keep Staf alive was to not run away with the horses and leave the bridge unguarded so enemy rouges had to fight your horse archers with full HP.
But yes, rouge units cant take damage at all and needs to be used to kill squads with lots of backline units or they get overrun super easy.
