A ‘lot of you may be thinking that the episode didn’t move the story forward very much, because we spend most of it with two side characters who are already dead. But this episode was necessary for a few reasons. It perfectly encapsulated the theme of the series, and serves as a microcosm for Joel and Ellie’s journey.
Doug: Say what now?
Basically, this episode shows what’s really at stake for humanity. Are people going to survive, or are they going to live for something? And, it’s everything that I want from an adaptation. When the series was announced, I thought that all you would have to do to make a show was refilm the cutscenes into a movie, because the story of the game is so good. Well, [obi wan, i was wrong]. This episode shows the right way to adapt one medium into another.
Doug: What do you mean?
Well, let me tell you what the Bill story is like in the game. For one thing, Bill has rigged up an entire town with traps, not just one street of a subdivision. I think the show changed this for budget reasons, but it also made the story more personal. Bill isn’t interested in the town, he just wants his house, his own little fortress to protect.
Then Joel and Ellie try to avoid the traps in town, and there’s even a sequence where he hangs upside down and has to shoot infected to save her–then Bill saves his life and they go to grab a car battery before zombies can kill them.
The key difference is that we don’t meet Frank. We hear about him. [clip]
Doug: Hey Bill’s voice sounds familiar.
That’s because he’s voiced by W Earl Brown, Dan from Deadwood. [clip].
Doug:Oh, uh-huh. Uh-huh.
Then when they find Frank’s body, it just seems like he’s Bill’s buddy that did himself in [clip]. Though, in hindsight, there are hints that they were romantic. [clip] But we don’t find out that Bill is gay until Ellie reveals the playgirl magazine she found in his house [clip].
And the only real indication we get about their relationship was a note that you find in the house:
Well, Bill, I doubt you’d ever find this note cause you were too scared to ever make it to this part of town. But if for some reason you did, I want you to know I hated your guts. I grew tired of this shitty town and your set-in-your-ways attitude. I wanted more from life than this and you could never get that.

I think that the lyrics from the Depeche Mode song at the end of the first episode was foreshadowing Bill and Frank's ending and not Joel and Ellie.

Superb episode that really fleshed out Bill.
Who was nothing more than a huge A hole in the game.
The show really made me feel for a character I tbh didn't like in the original.
As someone with first-hand experience caring for someone with ALS, I believe Frank is supposed to be succumbing to ALS, MS, or a similar neurodegenerative disorder rather than cancer. I believe a neurodegenderative disease was chosen intentionally since the symptoms include twitching and ultimately losing control of your body like in cordyceps infection. His medications are likely a muscle relaxer to prevent twitching and cramps in failing muscles, a mucus thinner to make swallowing easier, and some kind of antidepressant/antianxiety/mild sedative.
of course we find out… "he was my partner…." when frank is found hung.
The problem is that Bill has no contribution to the story. If joel found both of them dead with no note, he would still find a battery and go away with the car.
The romance with Frank presented was awesome! they told a part of Bill's construction that is great. The problem is that by killing him off, you don't get to see how he went off to the falling out with Frank like in the game. Ok, we're talking of an adaptation. But still. It would have much more importance to the story if Bill actually took a part on the story whether he is dead at the end or not.
If Bill had followed the same part as the game, we could be fed with their romantic story in a more extensive way and he could have great moments like the interaction he had with Ellie and the idea that Bill could be a great character to see in the series as a side character.
IMO, they took the best character from the first game and made him finite and unimportant
It was a good episode. Didn't really add anything to the show but anything with Ron Swanson has to be appreciated.
They showed us a story different from the story we are her to see… And it was amazing.

this episode felt like a master class of story telling, I love that linda ronstandt was featured, she has such a great voice. this episode was probably the best romance I've seen in a long time. just so wholesome, and heartwarming. I was completely enthralled, I cried, and I hoped it wouldn't have a romeo and juliet ending.
ramsey is extremly annoying as Ellie..very bad choice for the role…

The game & story are awesome. I would be completely disappointed if the show was a 1 to 1 to the game. There would be absolutely no reason to watch it. I waiting for the bigots to go crazy claiming they’re upset because it’s different from the game story.

This Episode is just superb on so many levels. there was no down side or slow spot. Like every second was something you needed to know!

The supply station “Cumberland farms” is a known and popular northeast chain of real world quickie mart style stores all around massachusetts etc. I thought that was a cool detail
This episode did not advance the story at all. It is a throw away. The only thing it advanced is an agenda. Love the show but not the incessant agenda push of this episode. (Let the hate begin)
They’re ruining Ellie. She was not a snot nosed little shit in the game. This is the biggest deviation from the game.
Also the spaceship remark Ellie made was a reference to the spaceship moment in pt2/ellie wants to be an astronaut
The only problem with this episode is there would never an arcade game at a Cumberlands, at least never that I remember
Wine is disgusting, and barely gets you buzzed. It pairs well with nothing, and having snarky opinions of wine is pretentious, and unimpressive. Wine 🤢🤮

I liked that Frank was able to say he had bad days with Bill. It made it more of a real relationship with depth rather than a one dimensional statement of “love is still out there”. Making it an effort leans more into the theme of the show
I thought it was pretty obvious in the game that Bill and Frank had some type of romantic relationship at some point in the game and that Bill was not straight, the two biggest points was his reaction to seeing Frank’s body and I think if you look Ed around there was a Letter Frank Left, also the nudie magazine with the hung guy that Ellie finds in his stuff… to me it was obvious they weren’t “just friends” Anywho I love what the show did with their story, it was beautiful
You also explained the purpose of the episode! As the homophobic video said "it's pointless and just pushing an agenda because they're cowards" during a time when gay narrative isn't acceptable. Unlike that vid, u relate it back to the primary two characters and how the gay relationship isn't about homosexuality but of having a full filed life through a dependent relation, rounding out the tough exteriorer to soften and motivate longevity. "We are old thus we are here" (paraphrase), suggesting they're effective in surviving and prospering. So thank you for countering the hate. And connecting it back to the full story and not treat the episode as a standalone passion agenda.

Nah they took a storyline that was hinted at at most and drew it out because they would score brownie points in today's backwards society. Was cringe and pointless. I liked bill but now he's gone too so yea pointless

This episode reminded me of S04E04 for Lost, "The Constant". It helped world build, focused on a side character, and was emotionally resonant. I cannot wait to see where Neil and Craig take this story.
Great video. You pointed out a ton of things I wouldn't have caught on regarding the symbolism etc. It is kinda funny you missed the line where they said the 80s music would go on automatically if Bill didn't reset it every few weeks though.
This episode is the same kind of beautiful interlude story inside a story, like Carl and Ellie's in Pixar's UP.
Should be called the gay of us
This episode was pointless and ruined the character and took away from showing the loss and survival aspects. Bills character was to show what Joel would be like without someone to care for. Just didn't like it at all smh
