After a disastrous 2-7 start, could Las Vegas’ Antonio Pierce be the next one-and-done head coach?

According to Charles McDonald of Yahoo Sports, since 2018, seven coaches have been fired before the end of their first season. Carolina’s Frank Reich was the last after he went 1-10 in 11 games in 2023.

The Raiders fired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy on Sunday night, which isn’t a great sign. In his Monday column, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported there’s “pessimism in that building on the direction of that team right now.”

“Part of the issue to this point, as I’ve heard it, is the way Pierce patched the staff together, rather than making sure there was alignment on both sides of the ball,” Breer wrote. “That led to coaches having to invest time to teach other coaches, which didn’t help with the players.”
Last season, star players, including defensive end Maxx Crosby, vouched for Pierce to land the full-time job after he replaced Josh McDaniels, going 5-4 in nine games.

Now, Pierce — a former New York Giants linebacker — may be losing his ability to connect with the locker room.

Following an embarrassing 36-22 Week 3 home loss to the Panthers (2-7), Pierce called out some of his players, saying they made “business decisions.” He later apologized for his comments.

Pierce was probably trying to motivate the team, but the strategy hasn’t worked. The Raiders have lost five of their last six games, and three have been by 14 points or more.

Several of the Raiders’ problems stem from subpar QB play. Gardner Minshew has more interceptions (eight) than touchdown passes (six) in eight games. The Raiders fired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy on Sunday evening and the response to the decision has been mixed.

Whether Getsy deserved to be fired or not, the team is clearly in a tailspin and former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon shared his thoughts on head coach Antonio Pierce and the entire organization on Monday.

“At some point you have to look at the whole operation. I’m hoping that’s what is going to happen at the end of the season,” Gannon told Michael Lombardi on VSiN Live. “I can’t imagine Antonio Pierce will be back next year.”

  1. This organization needs to clean house from the coach to the pregame radio host. Completely and utterly thorough resetting of everything thing. Time for Mark to get everyone hanging around from the Al Oakland days gone!!!!

  2. As long as AP is HC our losing streak will be safe. Losing starts with a HC who only had 1.5 years as a LB coach and has no idea how to make an OFF or DEF gameplan and relies on a "Game Coordinator" to make decisions. Fortunately TB12 does not like AP as HC as much as I don't like him, so mission will be accomplished in the next couple of months. Cheers!

  4. Hey Wasted,,,, Seriously speaking football is part of my Life I'm 74 yrs old I'll tell you rite now this applies HS football, College, and the NFL,,,If you have bad couching , especially your Head Coach with no experience that creates bad energy that transfer to the players that's makes them unbalanced uncomfortable….So what happens next, Injuries players start getting hurt, Because they don't know there assignments, confused, no confidents,,,,no faith in there coaches…. period!

  5. Yo Wasted love the show and energy but Getsy wasnt AP 1st choice for OC, Kliff bailed and he had to scramble for scraps left and JD was his choice for QB. Let hime get a QB and then see how it goes until then dont throw the baby out wit the bath water. I'll give him another shot with real QB and our defense back healthy

  6. I’m neutral right now ! Just let the tank finish and go from there! If we are tanking! Glad Getsy is gone! AP should have pulled the trigger after Pittsburgh game but he fumbled that now he has to fight for his job! He got dealt a weird situation with not getting the intial OC! Let’s see how it plays out ! Not time to raise my Blood Pressure over these mofos

  8. This raiders team has regressed significantly in past 3 seasons.
The organization needs to do a hard reset and build on the new talent they just drafted on. I'm sorry, but AP Is way out of his league. They need to make a hire for competent. Head coach competent offensive coordinator and build the trenches because this offense looks worse than a high school football team. The defense is losing so much confidence, and they're getting gassed by the third quarter because darn offense can't stay on the field to give them a break who cares if people think they're tanking or not. Tanking, they're just bad period..😮

  10. Waisted as always cooking! Raider way is no longer winning. It’s being less than mediocre. Perfect example with the niners. Now they are in the Super Bowl every other year and in the NFC championship yearly it seems. Not to mention they now have a coaching tree as well. GET THE RIGHT GUY!

  11. The defensive weakness in the Bengals team was run stoppage up the middle. The first drive of the game, they couldn’t stop it and yet we go away from it?? What the hell are these coaches looking at on the field? Thats on our “CEO” to be yelling in that headset to pound the rock up the gut (pause if necessary)

  12. It's not confusing. A.P. told us his vision. Run and defense. We had JJ when he said that. Telesco has a different vision. A.P. said he didn't want a bandaid and he's willing to do whatever to get HIS QB. Telesco drafted 2 OL and a TE. Textbook rebuild strategy of inside out NFL team building. A.P. wanted Kingsbury, got him in the building, and Telesco didn't give him a 3rd year. A.P. contract details still a secret which is WEIRD AF. If they Fire A.P. and we lose Maxx. I'm not spending another penny on this franchise! You don't get him HIS QB.You don't get him his choice of OC. You get rid of his top 5 RB and you bring in Minshew and Getsy. That's before all the injuries. Defense has 1 bad game minus the Carolina and now PG and AP defense is GARBAGE? Wow! This is crazy!!!

  13. Telesco made the roster weaker than when JMD got fired. But its AP fault. QB room, Horrible, Rb room horrible. Coupon tom wouldnt give Kingsbury a 3rd year and brought in Getsy. Then every D line star besides Maxx got hurt. The team is 2-7 and fighting like they still in the playoffs. The only ppl gave up on AP is the Fans. Most of whom didn't want him in the first place. Instead of Coupon Tom bringing in the OC, QB that AP wanted. He brought in Getsy and Minshew. He refused to move up. Then he refused to pay JJ and gave Minshew the money he saved on the JJ contract. So AP actually got a weaker team than when he was hired. Thats facts! Im NOT giving up on AP till the Players and the locker room give up on AP.
