Larry Rolla was a talented, respected trainer who invented new ways to fix aging and injured racehorses. Despite his success, his demons and his association with the Mob both helped and destroyed his life. He was involved with every phase of Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing, seen it all and done it all, learned how to duck and dive and live through it all. He is a unique man whose past most would not survive. More importantly, he was an extremely compassionate guy who took people with damaged lives and helped them as well, if he could. He liked fixing things that needed fixing.

I met/saw his girl Ora one morning at qualifiers in the Meadowlands paddock guessing maybe late 1977–ish and she was absolutely drop dead stunning gorgeous. I thought my legs were going to buckle, she was that fine. Wonder whatever became of her?

I’ve really enjoyed your stories. I‘m of a horse gambler guy and it would seem to me that you are what in the the horse industry would call a foot guy and I can respect that. It seems you instinctively knew what to do and keep the horse’s body and feet healthy. You briefly mentioned the use of lasix on one of the podcasts. I wish you could elaborate on your opinions of lasix and its use today. I remember when it was only used now and then but now it seems most thoroughbreds are running on it. Thanks for the stories.

Love that winner's circle pic. I see that Mustafa Hamsho made the presentation to the winner. As a child, my dad took me to see the Hagler/Hamsho title fight ('81) in Chicago. Hagler dominated the fight (won every round, as I recall) but Hamsho was TOUGH AS NAILS.. I remember my dad saying that "you couldn't knock that Hamsho kid down with a bat!" after watching him remain upright despite the beating Hagler put on him that night. Nothing to be ashamed of, as Hagler is certainly one of the very best fighters of the past fifty years.
Hey Larry I mentioned previously I have one with Mike Forte @ Yonkers. I was good friends with Joe Martucci (Vacs Happy Cress, Trainers Playboy) up until his passing. Do you remember him? He went on to work for Louie @ Capricorn Limo. I worked at the Regency Hotel where Louis had the concession. John Miratella worked for Louie as well later in life.
