Larry Rolla was a talented, respected trainer who invented new ways to fix aging and injured racehorses. Despite his success, his demons and his association with the Mob both helped and destroyed his life. He was involved with every phase of Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing, seen it all and done it all, learned how to duck and dive and live through it all. He is a unique man whose past most would not survive. More importantly, he was an extremely compassionate guy who took people with damaged lives and helped them as well, if he could. He liked fixing things that needed fixing.

  10. Larry, Just finished watching your podcast and to answer your question about ratting on those guys, only you can answer that question. Your from the old school (Which is a good thing by the way) to not rat. You also didn't know at the time what kind of a price you would have to pay, but in the end you did what you felt was right. A stand up move and in the end, your dignity and not wanting to hurt the other guys and their families like Jimmy said is what really matters when all said and done.

  12. I grew up at the Pocono Downs racetrack. They didn't have the money in the pools before Mohegan Sun casino came there. The horses are winning in 1:51 flat now. They used to struggle to win in 2:00. The only thing that hasn't changed is that the grandstands are still empty.

    I love all of your podcasts, but this one was super cool.
    Having the man who never speaks actually go back and forth with you was so entertaining.

  26. GREAT CONVERSATION GUYS!
    Holding the boss's umbrella isn't being submissive, Larry – it is considered an honor, as is being his driver. Just think of the power Italians had in this country. To be part of that, to continue and expand the reach of such an organization is something VERY few ever have a chance to experience. Not saying I condone it, exactly – but the groups controlling this country now are FAR more evil in my opinion.
