The Against All Odds podcast is a true story of one man’s ride through the tainted world of horse racing – a world riddled with greed, corruption, celebrities, drugs, sex and the Mob.
Larry Rolla was a talented, respected trainer who invented new ways to fix aging and injured racehorses. Despite his success, his demons and his association with the Mob both helped and destroyed his life. He was involved with every phase of Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing, seen it all and done it all, learned how to duck and dive and live through it all. He is a unique man whose past most would not survive. More importantly, he was an extremely compassionate guy who took people with damaged lives and helped them as well, if he could. He liked fixing things that needed fixing.

Congratulations on a 1000 subs
Love this content..Larry desperation can’t be measured at a person’s situation at the time..if it doesn’t involve causing desperation to the same level to another…mission accomplished..
You are right Larry that would be some kind of a bulshit excuse, a lot of people were handicapping that race and betting serious money. Some people were probably betting their rent money . Two wrongs do not make a right. I have to go back to listen again because I wasn't sure I heard you right. Where is your proof that Todd Pletcher has had horses that have had 75 heart attacks that is absolutely impossible to believe. If you have proof of that please show it.
Thanks for another great one, Larry; Keep on keepin' on
I recommended you to a few friends in the Borgata horse room. I love your channel, and Jimmy is great too.
Well done Mr. Rolla. Another awesome podcast 👍
Best pod on the net about rationalized behavior. The public was betting against a stacked deck.
Great podcast!
I still remember the night I swore I’d never bet more than $20 on a harness track( I bet way more at the flats). It was at Roosevelt raceway . Abe Stolfus( Amish) left from the 6 hole, got an easy lead, everyone lined up behind him single file, and they went to the HALF in 1.07 ( JFFA HORSES) and NOT A SINGLE DRIVER PULLED OUT!! Needless to say, Abe won the race
Congratulations 🎉
Thanks for your honesty Larry. Great podcast.
Dr. Alex Harthill the Derby vet of choice from Kentucky was a notorious engineer of countless betting coups which he loved more than his ethics as a doctor. Stay well Larry, peace.
I like the horse racing stories. Did you ever get into the breeding end of the game? Breeding a good horse is very lucrative. If a horse is born in Lexington KY. it is worth more money we used to haul brood mares and had them foal right in the truck so they could say they were born in Lexington. It was kind of a scam. I knew people who collected on insurance money, but this was show horses hunters and jumpers I hauled the best in the world in the show industry. This guy was top 3 in the industry he is dead his son still rides today. Did not only happen in the racing industry it happens in the show industry too. Larry is right a horse trainer told me one time out of all the race horses that are bread less than 1% really make it big, so what do you think happens to all the horses that never make it? They get butchered, people overseas go crazy for horse meat.
Even today there is so much criminal activity against the public at racetracks. Do you still notice it today ,Larry?
A lot of criminal activity at Gulfstreampark with all the Venezuelan trainers?
As always great content. Just started reading your book. Have Jimmy put a bell on the table so he remembers next time. Lol
Wow congratulations with 1k subscribers!!
I love how your pleading your case you had to , to stay alive passing the blame on everyone but poor ole Larry and the your puppet that you continue to try and keep him quiet because well he’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer says the way you put it all together YOU Larry your a genius he says don’t you think you’ve done enough damage already?? You cheated the public, you cheated your owners, you cheated your horses you cheated everyone but yourself!!!
Mr Rolla what is your take on the two breakdowns at saratoga this year? Two horses that had considerable layoffs in between starts and very weak racing history on the dam side. Do you think breeding or track surface is the issue? Thank you for the videos!
Congratulations on your subs and great success I truly enjoyed our conversation I look to do more with you Larry all the Craig Gatto

I Know Larry and His Family fifty three Years, Living directly accross the street from His Childhood Home. Corruption, crime, or anything immoral, is not His Legacy. The persona projected here is a masquerade, which each and everyone of us adopt in this game called Life. As A Matter of fact, You Will never hear from Him His True Self, which Certainly Will Give Him His Admission into Heaven. Larry is a Kind, caring, Gentle Soul, with the inner, and Physical Strength of A Giant. His Presence is Peaceful, with a soothing calming Energy. He processes a Charming, witty, sincere aura, while quick to Laugh, ( which He Loves), Listen genuinely, and make You comfortable, and go to any extreme to Help You. He can Be dollar-less, and open His car window and give whatever change He has in His car to some unfortunate Soul, while speaking, and Listening to there gripe, and accommodate them in any way He can. His Love for Animals is immeasurable, and He adores Children. I Personally have been with Him while He was in Dire circumstances; one in Particular where in Freehold Raceway, for months, where on His Due date to pay the Mob their weekly Money, We would be at his Personal window table, With three Massive Goons just waiting by the door to the end of the races, to either collect, or reconstruct his face and Body. It would not faze Him!!!! I was 15 years old and doing the betting for Him. Seeing the goons each race I went out. He was betting hundreds of dollars a race to come up with the eight grand payment, and did it, each and every week; HANDICAPPING, not with inside information. Sometimes with only one race left, without breaking a sweat!!! He is the coolest, calmest, worry- free Person on this Planet, Hence why You see Him now in His eighties looking Superb… In His Mom's ( Ms. Betty) last few Years, He would Drive 100 Miles to Monticello two, three times a week, to just Be with Her, even sometimes borrowing gas and toll money. He was not only a Great Son, but the most Loyal Person I have ever Met. I have many Larry Rolla stories, and Will share one with You. It was August 1975, I was 17 and was Living in Monticello With Larry, and one of the Most Beautifulest Lady's I have ever seen ( Ora Brande ), His then Girlfriend, ( whom He chose over an Actress, Michelle Lee ), they were My Parents, in My Mind. We went to Rea car Dealership and Picked up two Brand spanking New 1976 cars. A lime Green Firebird for Ora, and a Fire mist biarritz eldorado. The most Beautiful Car I Have ever seen. In two weeks I was to go down to Queens for a Big Party celebration and Larry said take Ora's car. After going to his Personal Haberdashery and Buying Me an expensive Suit, and giving five one Hundred Dollar Bills. So the night before I was to leave I went to the Round Robin, a Club on route 17, got drunk and went Home and Switched Cars. Larry's Love for Music showed in His Cars, He would have a special constructed box built in His truck to hold a hundred 8-track cassette's. I took the Cadillac, drove a bit, and stopped to fetch some Shirley Bassie and Sinatra cassette's and continued to the Highway. I put Shirley in the player, put on the cruise control, and crossed My legs on the seat for the 100 mile trek. I got two exits and fell asleep, woken by the gravel on the shoulder, I couldn't untangle My legs fast enough but was able to turn the wheel left: however I was imbedded in the chain link poles and distroid the Car. The next Morning Larry was waiting in front of the Police Barracks in Ora's Car. I came out without Being charged, ( Because Larry Was the King of Monticello), and opened the Car door expected to Be Blasted, Larry said Go get the tapes out ofthe trunk, and never said a WORD: Till this day!!!!! He drove Me to the Greyhound bus gave Me two more Hundred, that I spent at the round Robin, and Said Be at Work Monday morning.
I never went back. One of My biggest of a Live time of BLUNDERS EVER.
Larry continued to Be My FriEND until recently trowing Me to the curb for whatever reason. However, He was always and still is My Hero!

Hi Larry, while listening to your podcasts, I’ve thought of the question as follows. Through your years in harness racing, could you look back after all that you’ve been through and say that hard work pays off in the end?
