‘Largest fleet since the end of WW2’: Defence Minister on Navy expansion

Defence Minister Richard Marles has spoken on the increase in the Royal Australian Navy’s size to being the “largest fleet since the end of the Second World War” following the release of the Navy Surface Review.

The new surface fleet strategy will cost $11.1 billion over a decade.

“Today, the Albanese government is announcing an increase in the number of warships in the Royal Australian Navy to being the largest fleet since the end of the Second World War,” Mr Marles said at a media conference in Sydney on Tuesday.

“Right now, the Royal Australian Navy has 11 warships.

“As a result of the government’s response to the Surface Fleet Review, today we are committing to take that number to 26.

“At the heart of that, we’ll be building six Hunter-class frigates at the Osborne Naval Shipyard in Adelaide, and this will see the first of those ships delivered in 2034, which is the current timeframe.

“We’re also announcing today that we will procure a new general-purpose frigate, of which we will procure 11 – this will be a new class of ship for the Royal Australian Navy.

“We’re also procuring six large optionally crewed surface vessels.”

  1. These naval personal seem out of shape, borderline obese, that was not how it was in my day. I guess warfare doesn't require those fighting to have physical prowess but instead emphasis is on brains

  2. Literally a joke…more surface vessels that we can't man and will be subpar anyway let alone trying to man the AUKUS subs though current govt refuse to have nuclear power for energy.
Also..is the current navy half serviced by short stumpy women?..we doomed.

  4. So paper boats for another ten years! If this incompetent government makes it through the next election, but if the LNP is elected, we will have another review and more paper boats 😅, our governments have been building a paper military for two decades now, we should be safe as houses, so long as everyone else only builds paper militarys 😂😅😊

  6. Politicians love service men and women when its time for a photo op and when its time to build monuments to the dead. The shit lite party can be trusted as much as their opposite, but worse party to support the ADF. That we have a royal commission into veteran suicides tells you everything we need to know about the ADF, and their most effective killing branch, DVA.

  7. Sounds good , but how are they going to crew them ? Not enough Australians want to serve in the navy and many of those that do are not accepted.
Perhaps the military could start by removing the British Crown from the Naval emblem and replacing it with the Australian coat of arms, and changing the designation of AUSTRALIAN warships from His Magesty's (the British Monarch King Charles III) Australian Ship to Commonwealth of Australia Ship (CAS) .
Currently it resembles just a colonial fleet of Britain's Royal Navy!
