Labor's fuel efficiency standards ‘not a radical policy’

Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen says Labor’s new fuel efficiency standards are “not a radical policy”.

The federal government revealed it will set minimum standards for manufacturers on fuel consumption and carbon emissions in vehicles they sell in Australia.

There are concerns the target of a 60 per cent emissions reduction in vehicles by 2030 may price popular four-by-fours and Utes out of the market.

“This is not a radical policy. These standards have been in place,” Mr Bowen said.

“It has been in place in the United States since 1975, almost as long as the member for Fairfax and I have both been alive, 1975, Japan 1985, China 2005, South Korea 2006, the European Union 2009, Canada in 2011, vehicle emission standards were introduced in Mexico in 2013, India in 2014.

“Those woke warriors, those well-known renewable energy inner city dwellers, the government of Saudi Arabia, introduced fuel efficiency standards in 2016, and New Zealand in 2023.

“It is well beyond time for Australia to catch up.

“It is well beyond time for Australia’s consumers to have access to the same choices that 85% of motorists around the world get, but motorists in Australia and Russia do not.”

  1. How can a policy, deliberately designed to progressively push all petrol and diesel powered cars completely out of the market over the next decade or so not be describes as a 'RADICAL policy'. That is exactly what it is intended to do. At least the US is being honest in clearly stating such a policy IS designed to do exactly that.
A US policy that even they are backing away from at a million miles an hour. And for the exact same reasons that Australian will ultimately encounter, even worse here because of our less populated country, with a VAST percentage barely inhabited. An EV in the middle of the Simpson desert looking for a charging station, the ultimate joke.

  3. Bent over Bowen gaslighting again……The way Labor are going they will be banished to the political wilderness for the next two decades after the next election.Apart from the ruling elite and the mega wealthy there is not a section of Australian working society they haven't either screwed over yet or are about to screw over.Where are the adults and elder statesman that Labor used to count among it's ranks ? This crew are like a group of middle school climate fanatics who do not understand or care about the economic and societal damage they are causing with this jihad

  4. Every day – labor just show they the rabbits of Australian politics. They honestly feel – attacking everyone – by driving up the cost of living – blaming climate change – justifies – their lies. All labor have done since losing the voice vote – is go more like the greens. And the greens will take credit for labor adopting – their own stupid ideas.

    Labor takes nothing into account.

    1. The long distances people have to travel in Australia – and there is a lot of Australia – outside any capitol city.

    2. Labor does not consider – if think – food prices or fuel prices are high in the city. Country areas they are a lot higher. Food and fiber – don't magically appear on supermarket shelves. It has to be grown and produced. And that takes energy – in the form of fuels and electricity – to make that food. Otherwise – no farmers – no fuel – NO FOOD. You starve. It's that basic.

    3. Consider $2.00 a liter for petrol or diesel.

    4. And with fuel prices like that – all food moves on road freight. And the cost of fuel – drives those prices – to keep rising.

    5. Somehow labor thinks – their little piddling electorates – it holds in the inner cities of Australia – are big. They are not. You can get around them on a push bike.

    6. Once you start moving anything by road – it costs a lot more – based on the cost of fuel.

    7. A lot of people live in smaller rural communities.

    8. Because labor has wrecked the health care system. A lot of people have to travel by road – and labor wont give rural patients – access to any compensation – for traveling to see doctors- that are several days – to complete – due to distances.

    9. Labor refuses to listen – look at Paul Murray – on his program – they refuse to take part.

    10. Labor are outright lairs. On all every policy.

The issue of electric cars is – the people who want them – already own them. And electric cars – or 4wd's or trucks – don't work over long distances – these are simple practical things – labor just refuse to listen to. That is why labor is crime syndicate family. It steals your tax money – gives it to terrorists. And says – look at what we did – aren't we so wonderful. They get the tax money – from mining – from you – from vehicle taxes – fuel taxes. They will lie about how they spend it. As they know – what they are doing is criminal – and they have to lie to cover up their lies.

Stealing tax payers – without asking voters – for a referendum – on how that money was spent – and only owned up to it – when Israel proved UNRWA – was funding terrorists. Australia – has a lot of problems – politicians should be solving. Labor just refuse to admit – anyone exists outside – the electorate – of any labor politician.

Tells how criminally – derelict – they are. How disconnected labor is from the truth. And how they lie to all Australians – every day. They should resign – in disgrace. Labor loves flying – boy do they love flying – just ask airplane albo – and frequent flier miles marles. And the planes they love flying in – don't work on batteries. Get labor to drive around Australia in electric cars. A no flying ban on labor – would be a good move.

But they are entitled to do – they say. It's easy when you live off the largesse of tax payers. And you misappropriate tax payers funds – for your own personal pleasure.

You have to ask yourself – how much longer are you going to let these lying socialists – steal your country from you. They have done nothing for Australia.

  5. This is, I think, the only time I have found Chris Bowen to be right. Feels real odd actually thinking “wow, he’s not lying through his teeth and has scored a point on the opposition.” Terrible optics for the liberal party may I had.
