  1. The style is film noir. There are many great noir movies from the 1940s and 50s, but modern takes on the genre — similar to this move — include Mulholland Falls and the great, great Chinatown.

  2. 3:30 Plastic surgery was around at this time. It got its start during WWI. I think the only real people portrayed in this movie are movie star Lana Turner, her boyfriend Johnny Stomponato and gangster Mickey Cohan.

  3. "Red" Means Communist and/or pro-Soviet. There was a witch-hunt in Hollywood in the 1950s for people perceived to be "Red" or 'Communist' sympathizers. Joseph McCarthy – a Senator from Wisconsin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_McCarthy), was obsessed with finding and exposing communist sympathizers in America – and he viewed Hollywood as a hotbed of this activity since they had so much influence on the public's perception of various ideas. There were in fact some communists in Hollywood, but not many. These people were mostly harmless and simply maintained a different idea for government and were not out to 'destroy America'. Most that were suspected were simply 'liberal-minded', however, 'Liberalism' and 'Communism' got mixed together in the minds of many conservative Americans. McCarthy made a public spectacle of his congressional inquiries by televising anti-communist hearings. A lot of Hollywood people were asked to name communists they knew of. His paranoia became more severe, and began looking into anyone who had sympathies for worker's right, unions, racial equality – all of which got lumped together with 'communist' activities. Some people named names and were 'black-listed' by Hollywood studios simply for fear of association. Careers were ruined and many didn't work again until the Hollywood studio system collapsed in the late 1960s. McCarthy was ultimately exposed publicly as a fanatic by journalist Edward R. Murrow and other's like him, and eventually the hearings ended, but not before a lot of damage was done. People in the United States often confuse economic systems with political systems. It's not 'Communism' versus 'Democracy', it's 'Communism' versus 'Capitalism'. One can be a Democratic Communist, or one can be an Authoritarian Capitalist. A film to consider would be Good Night and Good Luck which is the story of Edward R. Murrow – famed radio reporter from World War II and then television host – and his team of fellow journalists during the McCarthy hearings. Great Movie.

  4. Just so you know Dasha, this definition of what B-movies are comes directly from Wikipedia: "A B movie or B film is a low-budget commercial motion picture. In its original usage, during the Golden Age of Hollywood, the term more precisely identified films intended for distribution as the less-publicized bottom half of a double feature (akin to B-sides for recorded music). However, the US production of films intended as "second features" largely ceased by the end of the 1950s."

B-movies are still made today but you're more likely to see them as direct-to-home media or direct-to-streaming releases.

  5. Fun fact – that round of russian roulette Bud plays with the suspect – he's in control. People don't realize, but when you're behind the gun, you can see if the next chamber is empty, or not.

  6. This film is basically the son of Chinatown, the greatest LA noire movie.

You have to watch that film to see where LA Confidential got its influence.

This movie, and not Titanic shouldve won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1997.

The script is golden, the acting is excellent, the costumes and set design are gorgeous.
    The film score is solid.

This is an outstanding film in every way.

  7. Just for a little historical perspective, Bloody Christmas was an actual event that was quite the scandal for the L.A.P.D. Author James Ellroy often takes real-world events and uses them as a springboard to launch a fictional story, such as in The Black Dahlia. The novel of L.A. Confidential, which is about ten times more complicated, included a character that was pretty obviously based on Walt Disney. Mickey Cohen's man Johnny Stompanato also really did date Lana Turner.
