Kuiper Belt Object Orbiter – Mission to Quaoar

KBOO (Kuiper Belt Object Orbiter) is a long term exploration mission to the dwarf planet Quaoar. The spacecraft utilizes nuclear electric propulsion with two NEXT electrostatic thrusters powered by a large Brayton fission reactor supplying more than enough electrical power for the engines long term. KBOO has several instruments including imaging spectrometers and ground penetrating radar. The spacecraft carries a small lander to perform some in situ science. KBOO will spend several years orbiting Quaoar and its moon Weywot.

KBOO will be launched aboard a Kaon 1 Block IV with five KAME methalox engines and two large #32 SRBs. The upper stage is a converted and expanded DCSS powered by the more powerful RL10C-3 engine. The Block IV is capable of 80 tons to low Earth orbit.
