Kristen Miller – AARG: Student Program development-25th Annual International Mars Society Convention

Kristen Miller – AARG: Developing a Program for Student Research and Leadership

From the 25th Annual International Mars Society Convention, held at Arizona State University from October 20-23, 2022. The four-day International Mars Society Convention, held every year since 1998, brings together leading scientists, engineers, aerospace industry representatives, government policymakers and journalists to talk about the latest scientific discoveries, technological advances and political-economic developments that could help pave the way for a human mission to the planet Mars.

Kristen Miller is a faculty Member for Space Studies at the American Public University System (APUS). Analog Research Group (AARG) is a student-run, faculty-supported and multidisciplinary research program designed to prepare students to serve as crews on terrestrial Lunar/Martian analog missions. Its intent is to support student education and perform meaningful research, which will be relevant in furthering NASA’s long-term space exploration and settlement initiatives.
AARG has its purpose split into multiple parts:
– Create student crews to serve in analog simulations with focus on research and real-life team-based situations.
– Educational experience, providing leadership and management opportunities.
– Creating and forming partnerships within the analog community.

The research process at AARG includes training/reference videos regarding ideation and development, support through the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) for specific guidance. Since they focus a lot on research, the Research Coordination Steam (RCT) provide research support both pre and post mission. Each student research project is assigned to a member of the RCT, providing weekly reports to the mission. Each RCT member:
– Tracks progress and ensures deadlines set by FD are met.
– Provide research materials/forms.
– Provide information on habitat requirement/resources.

Provide guidance on the IRB and research processes:
– Methods
– Background research
– Help develop safety protocols/project mitigation.
– Ensure project readiness and provide support for publication of research post-mission.
