Kong: Skull Island Movie Review

Before the next Monsterverse movies arrive, I’d better review the only one I haven’t yet! Kong: Skull Island, which is yet another origin story for King Kong. In case you were unaware, outside of the original movie there was also a 1970s remake, the Peter Jackson remake, and of course the miscellaneous King Kong tales that cropped up after the beast ended up in the public domain.

But this little excursion to Skull Island is a wee bit different. Being in the Monsterverse, Kong rather quickly establishes his role as a protector of the Earth and kicker of evil monster butt. The tribe on Skull Island is an inconsequential footnote of peace and love because of course they are, and the movie is mostly focused on watching giant monsters beat the crap out of each other.

So yeah, I had a good time.

  1. If u pay attention to the movie it's kinda implied that kong was actually brought to the island, it would some what explain the ship on the island and why they have a shrine to either kong or his parents. What made no sense to me in this movie how the WW2 soldier found out this lore if none of the natives never talked to him.

  2. This film left me completely empty. When a film only exists to build up another film it shouldn't exist! Can you imagine Orson Welles rushing a movie into theaters just to build up the public for 'Citizen Kane'? NO! When your focused on making an epic movie it can stand on its own.

  3. The original Kong Vs Godzilla wasn't a masterpiece but I loved it as a kid and still love it today. It has a great build up and delivers on the action. It also made more logical sense than this shit! WTF do they keep flying their helicopters at Kong? The purpose of an air attack is being able to strike from a distance! Kong also seems to be able to dodge projectiles moving faster than the speed of sound.

  4. At least the original Kong vs Godzilla explained why Kong was able to grow from 40 feet to 400 feet to stand toe to toe with Godzilla as a drank some special berry juice. This film just doesn't give a shit and expects audiences to not notice how Kong has grown 360 feet! The previous Kong films also explained why Skull Island was uncharted as it's surrounded by a think cone of fog. This movie just doesn't give a shit about building up the mystery.

  5. I love how they screwed up the diverse casting. It could've worked, but for the soldiers. But no, we NEED a female Asian scientist and a Black nerd too! But I have to admit, that Brie looks passable in this movie.

About that shitty AK scene: these Hollywood types tend to forget, that there was a Republic of Viet Nam, which didn't want to be a Communist utopia…

  6. Believe me, my mother and I really loved Kong in both Kong Skull Island, and Godzilla vs Kong, because he is a very unique character. Sure we are used to seeing him get killed and falling off a skyscraper, but the Monsterverse is the one series where he doesn’t get killed off. Good work on the review, can’t wait to see you reacted to Rampage, the 2018 movie with Dwayne Johnson.

  7. The soldier who sacrifice himself didn't want to go back to United States because it was eluded that he is homeless and join the army to get of poverty so this is selfless act because he knew that has no future back home

  8. I love how Decker takes time to point out what an absolutely TERRIBLE photographer Brie Larson's character is in this movie. Why should she be trusted with phenomenal cosmic power when she doesn't even know when to pull out a camera?

  9. I know Cole’s sacrifice is a joke, but they literally didn’t set up anything to indicate the creature were smart enough to know it was a trap. I just feel bad for the dude. It seemed like a really smart idea.

  11. for me Samuel L Jackson will always be an anti-white racist. He just way too much enjoyed "acting" all the anti white rants in his movies. if you'd have white actor who mostly plays racists, and does it very well, you'd think he's at least on some level and racist simply by accepting all such roles

  12. Some of the things in this movie are just kind of stupid things that need to happen for the story to happen. But them being surprised by the storm adds literally nothing except making them all look like fcking idiots.
