Katharine Houghton Hepburn (May 12, 1907 – June 29, 2003) was an American actress whose career as a Hollywood leading lady spanned six decades. She was known for her headstrong independence, spirited personality, and outspokenness, cultivating a screen persona that matched this public image, and regularly playing strong-willed, sophisticated women. She worked in a varied range of genres, from screwball comedy to literary drama, which earned her various accolades, including four Academy Awards for Best Actress—a record for any performer.

Raised in Connecticut by wealthy, progressive parents, Hepburn began to act while at Bryn Mawr College. Favorable reviews of her work on Broadway brought her to the attention of Hollywood. Her early years in film brought her international fame, including an Academy Award for Best Actress for her third film, Morning Glory (1933), but this was followed by a series of commercial failures culminating in the critically lauded box office failure Bringing Up Baby (1938). Hepburn masterminded her comeback, buying out her contract with RKO Radio Pictures and acquiring the film rights to The Philadelphia Story, which she sold on the condition that she be the star. That comedy film was a box office success and landed her a third Academy Award nomination. In the 1940s, she was contracted to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where her career focused on an alliance with Spencer Tracy. The screen partnership spanned 26 years and produced nine films.

The most significant relationship of Hepburn’s life was with Spencer Tracy, her co-star in nine films. In her autobiography, she wrote, “It was a unique feeling that I had for [Tracy]. I would have done anything for him.” Lauren Bacall, a close friend, later wrote of how “blindingly” in love Hepburn was with the actor. The relationship has subsequently been publicized as one of Hollywood’s legendary love affairs.

Hepburn challenged herself in the latter half of her life as she tackled Shakespearean stage productions and a range of literary roles. She found a niche playing mature, independent, and sometimes unmarried women such as in The African Queen (1951), a persona the public embraced. Hepburn received three more Academy Awards for her performances in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967), The Lion in Winter (1968), and On Golden Pond (1981). In the 1970s, she began appearing in television films, which later became her focus. She made her final screen appearance at the age of 87.

Hepburn stated in her eighties, “I have no fear of death. Must be wonderful, like a long sleep.” Her health began to deteriorate not long after her final screen appearance, and she was hospitalized in March 1993 for exhaustion. In the winter of 1996, she was hospitalized with pneumonia. By 1997, she had become very weak and was speaking and eating very little, and it was feared she would die. She showed signs of dementia in her final years. By 2000, she was regarded by her niece to be a “private person”. In July 2001, she was admitted to a hospital for pneumonia and a urinary tract infection. In May 2003, an aggressive tumor was found in Hepburn’s neck. The decision was made not to medically intervene, and she died from cardiac arrest on June 29, 2003, at the Hepburn family home in Fenwick, Connecticut. She was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford. Hepburn requested there be no memorial service.

  2. Great job! I am also from Hartford, CT, but grew up in a suburb. Her childhood home I believe is no longer there. I 've been to Old Saybrook ,driving, and visiting friend who have cottages by the shore in the Summer. I've been to her family gravesite. That cemetery Cedar Hill is big and beautiful with famous CT. people buried there.. It's pleasant walk, yet alone I did a bit scared. I have a few friends who enjoy walking there. She was a gifted and award winning actress, yet was that involved in the Hollywood scene.

  6. Great video as always Scott! I live in Stratford Connecticut. Katharine Hepburn had a small waterfront cabin here which sadly is no longer. She stayed there when she performed at the Shakespeare Theater which was burned down a few years ago. Stratford has some pretty cool history. Love your vids man!!

  7. My favorite actress of all time! Katherine Hepburn never tried to be anyone but who she was off stage. She spoke her mind and encouraged women to be independent, strong and to use their brain, and I do!

  9. Katherine Hepburn was an icon! She was way ahead of her time! She was a feminist, when it wasn’t cool. At one point she was one the highest paid women in Hollywood. I have so many memories watching her movies. Another’s great video Scott.

  11. My brother and his family lived in Old Saybrook. I love visiting there. My sister in law has driven me past Ms. Hepburn home a few times. Their daughter in law’s family owns a beach house on the long island sound and Art Carney lived next door and is buried in Old Saybrook. Please try the ice cream at The Honeycone Craft Ice Cream on Main Street in Chester, CT. Best ice cream ever

  12. So glad you featured one of my favorite actresses. I once read her autobiography, which was really a great insight into why she became the incredible woman she did. The house you featured, in a time a hundred years ago when children were to be seen and not heard, Katherine recalls a time that she and her siblings were encouraged to fully explore and take chances. KH: "My mother had a lady friend over for tea one afternoon, who glanced up and remarked to my mother that I was traversing across trees over the rooftop of the house at great heights. My mother, unfazed, told her not to bring it to my attention as she believed children needed to act independently and take calculated risks". Katherine was truly an icon in an era when strong women were not taken seriously. Thanks Scott. Theresa from Peterborough
