The problem with hate speech online is not about people telling you mean things about yourself. The dangerous stuff is when somebody is telling you mean things about others, when somebody is telling you, that some guys are going to harm you. This leads to escalating of dangerous social conflicts. It happened this year in the Great Britain. Some unknown online entity was spreading false information among Pakistanis about Hindus. The entity was expressing an outrage, a warning and a call for self defense. Many Pakistanis believed it and started to physically attack Hindus and then the vicious circle started to roll and resulted in serious civil unrest. This is the threat the Left is talking about. These disinformations were spread willfully and with bad intentions to create conflict. On the other hand the Right is talking about free speech violations. They are complaining about normal centrist or right-wing opinions being censored on different platforms. And I agree, that the opinions should never be censored. So, to conclude: we have a real problem with censoring legitimate opinions and objective facts AND we have another real problem with intentional inciting of violence using intentional disinformation.
