  1. Financially, it always makes more sense to work one more year. But, the reality is that finances are just one part of the equation and definitely not the top one.

  2. Today is my second day of retirement after 43 1/2 years. I may go back two days a week after a month (pension law) off to help my former staff transition. So I didn't have a crappy old job, I had a career that I enjoyed. It was just time

  3. I left work at the height of my earning at 56.5. Had 34 years on the job. I wasn't rich but I was debt free. It's been at least as comfortable as when I worked, and getting better. God is good

  4. We live solely on hubby's $1350 a mo. Social Security in a 1275 ft home. Debt free. Elegant outdoor kitchen, outdoor bath/shower + seating area+bonfire area we did ourselves, great for entertaining. We host monthly potlucks for Garden Club, Neighbors, Church, Friends/family & Cycling Club. Weekly, we take an extra full plate of food for the next day. One day a wk, we eat oatmeal + 2 potatoes we grow so pay almost zero for food 3 days a wk. Solar Powers our home/cars/e-bikes. No water/homeowners bill. $150 Prop tax. Cell $8, Starlink Wifi- $110. Free Medical. At age 70,I could take Social Security but it risks being hauled off to a nursing home later. We'd lose Medicaid/ he's got health issues already. Medicare has no such in home help. AND we'd lose $350 a mo. food stamps. I teach two gardening classes per week to Food Stamp Recipients. The Food bank donates bags of old organic potatoes, many are sprouting (a.k.a potato starters). Cut up, put in the dirt to grow into 3-5 more potatoes. Rinse & Repeat. Farmers donate manure. Add free wood chips/leaves. Each person now has their own potato garden. I teach how to grow sprouts in jars for .50 cents a day providing the initial seeds. Old Mayo jars w/lids work great. Sprouts are at PRIME nutrition & can provide our vegetable needs. We provide free cuttings to plant Mandarin Trees &. instruction. Some folks get off food stamps now able to work due to having the proper nutrition making depression subside/ailments heal.
We keep busy each week teaching these two 1 hr our classes,, host a weekly dinner Potluck, & attend church. This also acts as a Gardening Ministry thru Church. Now a lady from church teaches how to grow tomatoes every other month. The garden club saves extra seeds for us. I use some of my food stamps to buy tomato seeds. Hubby is very handy around the house so we do fine

  5. It is very difficult to know what is really beneficial and what is more about your own personal feelings. It may make you feel better, but doesn’t change anything or help in any way. We see this all the time.

  6. So guilty. Annual bonus incoming in less than 1 week from now. I was going to put my notice in later this month, March, and go the first week of April. Instead, I'm going to keep on keeping on maybe another 3 years until 65. 65 seems so far away but I'm on some expensive medication my current insurance is paying for. If that changes, I'll retire immediately. 65 is still young isn't it?

  7. New babies – there was a time several decades ago when hospitals isolated some babies due to whatever condition they think they might have. Contemporary well run hospitals now recognize the importance of new babies having human contact, right from the start.

  8. When your infant daughter was in NICU with SVT you didn’t fall back on your conspiracy theories. That health care is a scam and big pharma is out to get you. You didn’t say, “no doc, we got this, we’ll just wash our hands and everything will be fine.” You did EXACTLY what you medical team told you to do. As a result, your daughter is now living in San Diego with a career in computer science and a long and happy life in front of her. Had prideful Josh got in the way, the outcome would have been completely different. Conspiracy theories and religious restrictions are all fine and good until someone’s life hangs in the balance. Unfortunately I’ve seen it play our more than I’d like in my career.

  9. I worked a civil service job for 30 years after leaving the military (US Army Infantry) and I retired at 60 years of age on terminal leave until my final retirement date in January 2023. I couldn't retire prior to making that 30 year mark but, I got out 1.5 months early because of the terminal leave. It was a godsend!
