A good look through this lovely little book from Anyz, available as a hard copy or an E-book here…. https://anyz.io/shop/microsite/engine_upgrade?ref=highlight

  1. I think those pulleys would be for the control cable run to the propeller governor.

The R-2800 uses a dual magneto which is the black doohickey between those two round parts which are the individual distributors for each ignition harness.

Beautiful outcome on the greatest engine ever produced!

  2. Dear Nigel,
The double wasp is an engine I have taken a considerable interest in over the last year or so. Radial engines offer so much potential for detailing that it seems silly not to have a go at it. I got the detail wrong on my 1/48 Corsair, (same engine) and will be making up for that in my 1/32 variant!
I have visited the web site and can thoroughly recommend it. What a good partner for your channel!!
    Regards,

  3. …of course he comes out with a beautiful construction manual and cool parts…after I already built one. Damn it…I'll have to buy another Hellcat now. This hobby is going to bankrupt me…

    Good stuff Nigel…good stuff.

  4. Nigel, for your future reference, on an R-2800 engine, the magneto is the device that is mounted on the top, center drive pad of the reduction gear housing, and the two units mounted on either side of the magneto are the distributors that feed the dual sets of spark plugs. The distributor on the left fed the 18 spark plugs installed at the rear position of each cylinder, and the distributor on the right fed the 18 spark plugs installed at the front position of each cylinder. This information comes from Page 72 of the book "R-2800, Pratt & Whitney's Dependable Masterpiece" written by Graham White, published by the Society of Automotive Engineers, copyright 2001 ISBN 0-7680-0272-9. The text does not make clear the position from which they are referring to the "left" and "right" distributors.

  5. Hi Nigel, great review, I forgot how good these upgrade make the engine look. Question, is there any original plastic parts from the engine being used? Because based on his work. He might as well as do the complete engine in resin. Cheers.

  6. Just a clarification, the two cylindrical items on the front engine casing are the distributors. (Grey color)
The single item (12:00 o’clock) on the front engine casing is the (two in a single package) magnetos, (black color)

  7. Big fan of Anyz . Trumpeter announced a, (possible, but have some doubt) 1/24 P-47 for 2024. I recently built a 1/24 Kinetic kit using Anyz products as part of the engine modifications, video with a still image toward the end posted on my channel for anyone considering doing the same. A 1/24 F4U Corsair would be ideal for this level of detail partly due to the engine being up close with the front of the cowl. Airfix please make a 1/24 Corsair.
