Thoreau talks about the duty of the artist, in that the artist is to rejuvenate the world with his attempt at rendering truth honestly and sincerely as well as beautifully. That's the typical transcendental stuff, an artist's temperament and all that. Often we see layers of artistry in things like Christianity. That's why some of the greatest artists were/are Christian or some variety of religious.
