Judges 9:22-54 The Perils of Self-Promotion

In today’s teaching, Pastor Luke discusses the dangers of self-promotion and ambition. We learn the story of Abimelech, a judge in the Book of Judges, whose unbridled ambition and self-promotion lead to sin and destruction.

The sermon begins by discussing the meaning of Abimelech’s name, which means “my father is the king.” Pastor Luke explains that Abimelech’s name reflects his ambition and desire for power. He then goes on to recount the story of Abimelech’s rise to power, which was marked by murder and violence.

Pastor Luke then discusses the biblical principle of sowing and reaping. He explains that what we sow, we will reap. In other words, our actions will have consequences. Abimelech’s evil deeds eventually led to his downfall.

The sermon concludes by emphasizing the importance of humility and obedience to God. Pastor Luke encourages us to avoid self-promotion and ambition, and to instead focus on following God’s will.
