Brandi Carlile performs A Case of You with Joni Mitchell at Newport Folk Festival 2022. This performance marks Joni’s return to the festival for the first time since 1969.
Each of these videos of Joni is making me cry, and I’m so grateful that they were posted. I also have a newfound respect for Brandi Carlile. She could not have handled the situation with more grace.
This is a testament to the healing and therapeutic effects of music. It lives in the memory and informs our lives in so many ways. The power of music is amazing!
Absolutely brilliant and gorgeous to watch and listen such a magical performance…had me in tears [happy and sad] all the way through…when will we see her likes again
These clips make everyone cry, including me. I welled up before the first one I heard even before anyone started singing. I was wondering why everyone was having such a reaction. For me it is partly because back in the 60's and 70's Joni carried us through all pain and losses and lost loves at that time, and seeing her again taps in to all of that. That, plus, at her age now, her grace, dignity, talent, spirit, and seeing the love from her fellow musicians puts me over the edge.
I was 17 years old the last time Joni appeared at the Newport Folk Festival. I was 21 when I watched her rehearse at Philharmonic Hall, Lincoln Center, where I was working my way through college. Oceans have passed under the bridge since then, but Joni, like fine wine, has grown deeper, and richer, and truer with age. She was a sky goddess then, she is an earth goddess now. I have been feeling my age lately, but she has inspired me to overcome these inevitable challenges with grace, and dignity. Thank you for a lifetime of truth and love!
She is such a legend. A true hero in music and more. Her songs will live forever. I'm just crying in her honor.
Even Joni cant refrain from "Oh Canada."
Stunning… the joyful tears flow freely… Thank you, Joni, Brandi and everyone who made this magical moment happen.
