You could have gotten the crimson fleet missions through working with Vanguard, it is as a choice between that or finding out about the terrormorphs. Doing it this way will mean if you sign with Vanguard you just get to find out about the terrormorphs.

You actually don't have to steal anything. Just join the Vanguard and do enough missions and they just ask you to meet with Ekande.
easier to walk into any shop and grab whatever is on the desk in front of the vendor
