ABOUT THE VIDEO
_
In this video, I talk about Jesus, the Bible (The Gospels in the New Testament), The Book of Matthew, priorities, attention, regret, time, virtue, success, and building your best life.
In The Book of Matthew, Jesus said, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” So according to Jesus, the wise man builds his house on rock, while the fool builds his house on sand. And as you’ll see, to me, this is clearly a metaphor for the smartest way to build your life. What does it mean to build your life on rock instead of sand, and how do we do that? That’s what I’m gonna explore in this essay.
Let’s start at the beginning: what does it mean to build your life on rock instead of sand? Building your life on rock means that you’re building your life on a strong foundation, and if you build your life on a strong foundation, you won’t fall apart when hard times inevitably come. You’re able to survive and thrive in any tragedy. All the effort that you put into building your life won’t have been wasted, because your work stands the test of time. You’ll have this constant feeling of moving forward, and you won’t be regretful of how you spent your time. But building your life on sand means that you’re building your life on a shaky foundation, and if you build your life on a shaky foundation, you will fall apart when hard times inevitable comes. When tragedy strikes, you’ll find that much of the effort that you put into building your life has been a waste of time. You’ll feel frozen, or as if you’re moving backwards, and you’ll be regretful. You’ll say to yourself, “why did I waste my time on those things which don’t matter now?” or, ”why did I think those things were so important?” A lot of your time will have been spent in vain, and you’ll find yourself having to rebuild your life once more. So how do we get it right from the start? How do we build our life on rock instead of sand?
The life we build depends on how we spend our attention. Our attention is our most valuable resource, and it’s limited. So how do we decide how to spend it? How we spend our attention is determined by our priorities. And all priorities fall into one of two categories: time-dependent priorities and timeless priorities. So what does it mean, then, to build a house on rock? It means building a life where your highest priority is a timeless one.

It's funny how you take Jesus out of His on teachings. Apart from that it was pretty good 👍 He is the Rock
Can you give some more examples of timeless priorities?
you've made me cry in the middle of my breakfast… i'm looking forward to die amongst my friends and hopefully family. i already do some timeless things, now i am more sure of my path. thank you
You know, Tony has money for expensive medicine and he can book nurses to carry him, or others
I'm in despair. He forgot to say God/Jesus is our rock and foundation. Like I honestly became very sad and disheartened to hear that "learning" took the place of God.
If people would reply to this that God is not the rock, then I really dunno what to say.
I still hope everyone would find their main foundation in God. Like I legitimately want you all to experience the greatest and most perfect love and security that comes from only God.
Call me different….. But I find it selfish for someone to lead a life to build relationships with the purpose (even if indirectly) to have someone inconvenienced to care for them in their final days. Like someone that have kids with the hopes that their child or children will one day care for them in their old age. That should never be the goal and is so selfish. You've lived your life, how ever you chose…… Let them live theirs……
Just my opinion both of them died in the end it is just that she died with people and happiness and he died with money. I mean what was the point of both the things at the end you loose it all
I don't understand how you can build your life on a "foundation of learning" (or the other timeless priorities).
I definitely understand the sand vs rock example but it's not clear to me why learning or gratitude is "rock". It's clear that time dependent priorities are "sand" though because they are not permanent. I think I'm having trouble with the concept of a "foundation" which is a solid material thing, being used to describe a non-solid, non-material thing (like "Learning").
I think becoming aware of your priorities and where you are focusing your attention, that's big (for me). The rest seems a little to ethereal for me to grab on to. But by noticing the reason your attention is focused on something, that's revealing.
In a more literal sense, Jesus IS the rock, and when he returns, we will save the ones that are his and judge the rest because their ways are wicked. Jesus taught how to love one another and only those that love are the ones worthy of eternal life.
I’ve been doing this slowly and surely. I greatly value my life around learning and understanding the world around me
For me the foundation Jesus speaks is to build our lives based on what he teaches us. The more we focus/prioritize our attention on him putting his teachings into practice, …. the more our life will be better …Jesus is the rock…Just do things and live life with Jesus. So even if we get cancer, learnings don't matter money don't matter …what matters is how much we put the teachings of Jesus in our life. How miracles are true,
Your channel is dedicated to philosophy.
Your are taking bullshit about religion.
And do Muhammad too.
There was a Webtoon I read called "The Golden Spoon" where a kid finds a golden spoon who allows him to switch lives with a rich kid. Even though he ended up with all the money in the world and managed to help his previous family, he regrets not being with his family as much as his friend who he swapped lives with, since money was first in his book
Very eye opening thing I thought of…. Jesus did not read KJV. Jesus rejected the Torah. Jesus knew the truth. The priesthood (middle man) is a farce. You have your OWN connection with the divine creators who's nature is double
The story would be better if people were likeable—but they're not. Most people are arrogant, gossipy, manipulative and rotten. They make you want to be alone.
It is always better to build our mind flexible enough to change own prejudices anytime
Thank you so much
God bless you abundantly ✝️☦️🙏❤️😊
Jesus mother was a liar
XD
Understanding this is the key to wisdom. Love/care/attend to most what is eternal, truth, God, the highest possible value, whatever you want to call it. Eternal truths > contingent truths. And keep your mind, and thereby your life, structured in this way.
Thank you!💌💌💌
Do the work which you like, doesn't matter if it pays a bit less. Don't do that which you hate, even if it pays you more.
If only Jesus didn't resort to magic tricks.
he would have been best bud with Buddha way earlier like in that anime
It's a seldom skill to present a life lesson out of the Bible without connecting it to religion itself and the systems of Christianity. Very nice👌
I think legacy should be your timeless priority. What you contribute to humanity has more impact than what you learn. Many people still remembers notable figures in science and literature even after they're long gone. Once you build your legacy, you won't be filled with remorse when your time comes. In fact, you'll bid farewell to this world with an grateful heart
When Jesus said to Martha that Mary had chosen the best part, that's what he meant, she chose to learn by listening to words of wisdom instead of working hard on daily tasks that result in wordly rewards…
