Jesus and his disciples had just returned from a busy time of ministry, and they sought a quiet place to rest. But the crowds had followed them, eager to hear his teachings and to be healed. Jesus, seeing the large crowd, had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. He began teaching them many things, speaking of the kingdom of God and offering hope to those who had gathered.
As the day grew late, the disciples came to Jesus with a concern. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already getting late. Send the people away so they can go to the surrounding villages and buy themselves something to eat.”
But Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
The disciples were confused. “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they said. “How can we feed such a large crowd with so little?”
Jesus instructed them to bring the food to him. He then told the people to sit down on the grass in groups of fifty. Taking the five loaves and two fish, Jesus looked up to heaven, gave thanks, and broke the loaves. He began distributing them to the disciples, and they passed the food to the people.
To everyone’s amazement, there was more than enough food. Everyone ate and was satisfied, and when the disciples collected the leftovers, they gathered twelve baskets full of broken pieces.
The people were astonished by this miracle, realizing that Jesus had provided for them in a way no one else could. This was a sign of the abundance of God’s kingdom, where Jesus himself is the provider, meeting both physical and spiritual needs.
