Jayne Hounslow, 8, identified as Burlington hit and run victim

People in Burlington are in shock over the hit and run death of a little girl. Police say Jayne Hounslow, 8,Β was struck and killed in the parking lot of Burlington Central school on Wednesday night and the driver left the scene. A 21-year-old man was arrested a short time later.

Throughout the day people placed flowers outside the school along with balloons, stuffed animals, and even a chocolate bar.

Police say Jayne had just been dropped off at the entrance to the parking lot for a school theatre event Wednesday night. She was crossing the driveway when she was hit. Police say the driver of the vehicle didn’t stop but drive off.

Witnesses provided the licence plate of the vehicle. The 21-year-old man was arrested nearby and a large SUV was impounded.

On Thursday, the Halton District School Board (HDSB) was providing counselling for children at Burlington Central elementary school and the high school next door.

Police say the 21-year-old suspect was charged with failing to stop after an accident causing death and say there could be more charges.

  1. The parents were super negligent in dropping off their 8 year old to the entrance of the parking lot, instead of the entrance to the building! She was ALONE, at night, in a driveway! Smh RIP sweet little angel.

  2. Why someone would be driving so fast in a parking lot that's caused the death of a young girl? These young people think they owned the street and don't care about the consequences. My thoughts and prayers goes out to the friends and families of that eight year old girl. May her soul R.I.P.

  3. Unbelievably tragic!
Unfortunately the driver will get a slap on the wrist for this because our justice system is a joke.
Let's hope the driver who decided to take off gets the punishment they deserve, because no family deserves to go through this.

  4. What a love how dreadful my heart is broken for her parents. God be with the parents and grandparents and families something has to be done with these drivers
