They are some fossils so exceedingly rare that I never really expect to find one. But there’s a minuscule chance of finding them so they end up on the bucket list. Today started like any other, we rushed out of work with hopes that the water got drained or there was new digging in our Sloth Party pit, near Charleston South Carolina. We got there just before sunset, just in time to wave at the crew as they left for the day. They don’t even stop to talk anymore. We are like the night shift. We pulled up at the spot they told us we could park and we could see right away that they drained the water. It was lower than last time so we could finally dig some areas that have never been dry. Diva went her way and I went mine. I don’t know how much time passed but it was dark and my shovel peeled away the sandy clay to expose something different than big rocks and broken shark teeth. I almost called Diva over then, but I had to see a little more of the find to be sure. My eyes couldn’t believe it. I called across the pit, “Steph you gotta come over here. I found a…” I’m not going to spoil it for you. Watch the video to see me unearth, clean, and preserve one of the most awesome fossils I have ever dug.
