Japanese Breakfast – Jubilee | Album review, overall thoughts, and MORE!

Today I’m talking about Jubilee, the 2021 LP from Japanese Breakfast, which was my entry point into the work of Michelle Zauner. I talk about my favorite tracks and my thoughts on the album overall, but not before checking out a couple of interviews:

  1. Hello, discover the world of Diana Ankudinova, a young singer from Russia and a talented artist, author of her own songs. You will be surprised by the power and beauty of her voice, she has magic in her. You can believe me or not, but, you listen to her. Please pay attention and check out Diana. Thanks for attention. 2. Aaron – Perfect wrap up video! I think it probably makes sense at this point to work backwards, kind of like what you did with Mitski, go to Soft Sounds and then Psychopomp. Also, I would love a video where you discuss Crying in H-Mart after you finish it and react to several of the numerous videos she did during her virtual book tour during that time.

  3. Excellent as always 🙂
If You are reading the book i would suggest You react to psychopomp first and then soft sounds from another planet, in the memoir You get this glimpses in to the stories of some songs on the albums and You get to understand her state of mind while writing her lyrics, it's quite beautiful. Also Psychopomp has then song "in heaven" wich is kinda like a sister song to "in hell"

  4. really enjoyed your introduction to japanese breakfast!! i think you should work backwards, at least thats what i did when i discovered the band, and it was cool to listen to psychopomp already feeling like i (almost) fully know the band/their sound/what they're all about. it felt like the final puzzle piece that i was highly anticipating.

if you do end up listening to Soft Sounds next, I highly recommend this performance because the audio mixing is great and I think its one of their best performances live: pitchfork basement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lr6MQ8lwOE0&t=1287s&ab_channel=Pitchfork they perform 7 songs from the album and theres timestamps in the description!

  5. Posing for Cars, Paprika, and then Be Sweet, in that order for me. I'd say work backwards through their discography but please make sure to do the couple singles from the Sable soundtrack, Glider and Better the Mask!

  6. This is pretty darn close to my top 3, though I probably prefer "Posing for Cars" to "Be Sweet". But "Paprika" is number 1, yes. There are lines that still generate chills for me:

I want my offering to woo, to calm, to clear, to solve

But the only offering that comes

It calls, it screams, there's nothing here

  7. posing for cars was my top song of 2022. "i'm just a woman with a loneliness, i'm just a woman with needs" resonates so much with me, and it's such a great closer. the ending instrumental brings me to tears every time, i don't think i could ever get sick of it… jubilee was also my introduction to japanese breakfast i couldn't recommend more that you go through the rest of their discography.
