Jani Lane, born John Kennedy Oswald in Ohio, he played in several local metal bands in the late ’70s before landing in Los Angeles in the mid-’80s. His band Plain Jane became a staple on the wild L.A. glam rock circuit. He and bandmember Steven Sweet were invited by Erik Turner to join his band Warrant. The group was signed by Columbia Records, and in true heavy metal fashion, Lane bought and smashed a black Corvette with his share of the money from the band’s advance.

The group began to work on its legendary debut, Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich, a process that led Lane into a psychiatric hospital for a nervous breakdown after he caught his best friend having an affair with his girlfriend. Once he fully recovered, Lane recorded his vocals and the album went on to be one of the biggest-selling records of the glam metal era. The band’s follow-up Cherry Pie failed to meet the debut’s success; this, combined with the emergence and popularity of grunge, led to Warrant being dropped by their label.

Lane left Warrant in 2002 to pursue a solo career. He released Back Down to One in 2003, but shortly after was admitted to a rehab center for alcohol and drug-related exhaustion. He rebounded, and after a few acting roles and appearances on compilations, attempted to restart his own version of Warrant. Lawyers for the original band quickly struck this down. He later participated in VH1’s reality series Celebrity Fit Club. In summer 2010, Lane toured with Great White, filling in for singer Jack Russell, who was recuperating from surgery after suffering internal complications.

During the shooting of Warrant’s “Cherry Pie” video, Lane met model Bobbie Brown, who starred in the video, and they married in July 1991. They had a daughter, Taylar, in 1992 and divorced in 1993. Their relationship was recounted in Brown’s 2013 autobiography, Dirty Rocker Boys, co-written with Caroline Ryder. In 1996, Lane married actress Rowanne Brewer, a former Miss Maryland USA. They had a daughter, Madison, in 1997 and divorced in 2005. In 2011, Lane married his third wife, Kimberly Nash.

On August 11, 2011, the Los Angeles Police Department and local news stations announced that Lane was found dead of acute alcohol poisoning at a Comfort Inn hotel in Woodland Hills, California at the age of 47. Lane was pronounced dead by fire department personnel who responded to a call shortly before 5:30 p.m.

A public memorial concert with performances by Great White, Quiet Riot, Enuff Z’Nuff, Dario, and L.A. Guns was held on August 29 at the Key Club in Hollywood.

Jani Lane is interred at Bear Creek Cemetery in Fort Worth Texas alongside his wife Kimberly.

  1. Warrant was among the bands I worked for in the early 90s. Always loved Jani, yes he could be… Ummm… I'll say "difficult" when he'd been drinking, but at his core he was a pretty good dude. I think it's pretty cool that the place is a shelter now. It fits.

  16. It's sad that Cherry Pie was a song he hated and was afraid he'd only be remembered as Cherry Pie guy. He and Kimberly had it all and a cute couple. So sad both of them went so soon.

  20. This has been my third Christmas on my own
    I have no family and when they were alive they were narcissistic and sociopathic, so they cut me off from my friends when I was younger
    Since being on my own I’ve found out who I am and my worth
    I have people in my life because I want them there not because I need them

  24. I just hope that you pronounce his name Janie Lane I remember about the cherry pie song I love that song very much when they sing it that was cool I used to listen to poisoned with my friends back in the day😢❤❤❤❤❤
