In this first talk from the 2022-23 edition of the Herodotus Helpline, Dr Jan Haywood (Leicester) examines instances of human and divine action in Herodotus’ ‘Histories’. The talk centres on the involvement of gods in various stories, including the spectacular falls of Croesus and Pheretime, as well as the many accounts of divine activity during the major battles of the Greco-Persian Wars.
