We have friend of the show Jack White back on the show today along with a legendary special guest — Neil Young! This conversation with Rick Rubin is full of fascinating ideas, asides and musical history that let you know just how deep Jack White is. Jack’s work and a business ethic is unparalleled. His label Third Man Records has a rich roster of artists and three retail stores. They also own one of the few fully operational vinyl pressing plants in the U.S. which has been working overtime to keep up with the surging demand for vinyl. Jack also released two full length albums this year, and he’s currently on a worldwide tour.
After a recent two-night stand in Los Angeles, Jack stopped by Shangri-La to talk to Rick Rubin about the early Garage Rock scene in Detroit that helped shape him and The White Stripes. He also shared potential theories about why the “Seven Nation Army” riff is so catchy. And then he treats Rick and Neil Young to an acoustic performance of his new song “A Tip From You To Me.”
And to cap it all off, we will hear exclusive details about an exciting new project Rick’s been working on with Neil Young, that will be out soon.

ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory—maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations—in a world without liner notes—for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.
ABOUT RICK RUBIN
In addition to being a podcast host, Frederick Jay “Rick” Rubin is an American record producer and former co-president of Columbia Records. Along with Russell Simmons, he is the co-founder of Def Jam Recordings and also established American Recordings. With the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Geto Boys, and Run-DMC, Rick helped popularize hip-hop music.
In 2007, MTV called him “the most important producer of the last 20 years,” and the same year he was named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World.

Husker Du was/is one of the best 3 piece.
His first show was fugazi!!!
Neil Young walks into interview. Plays songs. Good vibes everywhere. What an honor. What a great interview!
Two things – they should have put a mic on Neil as soon as he showed up – I mean, audio counts right? And – too bad we couldn't hear Neil's playback of his new material. Good show. Thanks.
Brilliant move for Jack to ask Rick about his guitar/playing on the early Beastie Boys stuff
Just. Wow
I'll never forget when I first saw the NME article about "Jack White's new favorite band, Arctic Monkeys' …. Hearing Jack even just mention them so casually in this conversation makes me feel a certain way…. a good way. A full circle kind of way. Love Jack & Alex & company!
When he went with the blue I had to drop him
Why isn't there any video recorded for this?! I'm not gonna listen to a conversation for an hour and a half while staring at a wall.
Shout out to Nation of Ulysses 🙌🏻🙌🏻
I love you Rick Rubin! You inspire me to keep my dreams alive in ways you'll probably never even imagine!
Thank you!
Omg the trying to remember a melody struggle is real. Always record! Lol
Incredible Historical Document. 👏🏻
Gotta disagree with Jack on Jackson Pollock. I thought the same thing – that it was all idea and attitude – before I saw one in person. The textures of the painting blew me away. They reminded me of a Gothic cathedral.
Can't have playing in same room because of that screen moving…
Loved it.
What an amazing conversation. Just beautiful. 👌
Name checking 3-piece bands for their rarity and forgetting to mention Rush. 🤨
Amazing insight and feedback bouncing back from two groundbreaking pioneers. Excellent.
The whole part with Neil was amazing
man I hope five years from now manifesting will be considered offensive phrasing
Amazing that Jack has this clarity now about “copy cats” and not mention Black Keys
Great episode!
I really feel like Rick was kind of in awe of this moment. I know I was overjoyed to hear this.
I'm an artist not of the musical variety, and this is still GOLD
If people don't get excited about Jack White playing drums, they've probably missed this. Dang.

This is great!
Used to be a legend, but now just a douche bag old man.
Neil Young on a different level.
sounds like aus bank notes
Too bad that bigpharma salesman Neil Young brought down the level.
I wanna thank Rick Rubin for NOT producing the latest Ozzy album, to allow Andrew Watt do that (who obviously understands dynamic range). At least ONE major rock release is not murdered by compressors and clippers.
Meow.
Kneel Young
Loved this…Mr. White👌
Neil young, not a bad life
EXCELLENT!! I really enjoyed this conversation.
Jack White starts off by talking about staying open minded and then launches into several scenarios that he just won't stand for.
