I think others have mentioned but wouldn't metal bridges (cattle grids to allow snow) be more parctical in areas? More money upfront yet less in the long run. Now you know the extent of the problem it seems a no-brainer instead of constantly building/maintaing culverts. Maybe take a tip from Aussie farmers that deal with the wet and dry constantly.

I’ve read some of the comments. If you’re choosing to go with culverts instead of bridges, you might want to explain why in a future video. (The one that washed downstream is definitely stick-a-fork-in-it done for!) Were the culverts already there when you purchased the property?

If the water is choosing to use that path and reaches such a level it will do that type of damage, would a bridge not be a better solution?

Good day, AL . By my calculations, a 30" culvert is 56.25 percent larger area than a 24" culvert.
That would be a great opportunity to make a bridge. Where that culvert push out. 😉
Al, you’ve got plenty of large boulders that you can use as a bridge foundation for that one area that washed out your culvert.
What color blue are your kitchen cabinets?
That water pooled up because that culvert was too small.. because it was rusted out it made the soil around it moist.. pressure just kept making it larger until the channel that resulted was big enough to drain the pooled up water. you must have had a small lake trying to exit through that small culvert pipe. The actual repair to avoid any future failure should be as wide as the resulting channel not just a pipe the size that was installed previously. But you are going to factor cost vs necessity. To repair it to that level you would have to divert the water up stream by cutting a channel across the road and install a box culvert made of precast concrete where the blow out was that would also act as a bridge over that area and then redirect the water back through the box culvert you installed.. That should be what you do at the front of your property on the road out because you need egress.. on this piece of road maybe thats too expensive… I understand its all very expensive so you're going to do what you can do to get it back to where you can live with it and then repair it again if it fails again.. which could be in september or could be 20 years from now. ………… There is a saying they don't build them like they use to and some people joke about that when there is something old that fails but the saying really means that engineering before computers was always built far past the rated need and the reason was they couldn't easily account for unknown factors. So they overbuilt things to the best of their ability because they understood there could be unpredictable factors that would cause things to fail. Thats why 100 year old bridges can withstand the traffic of today because they were built well beyond the contemporary needs.
Anyway .. yeah.. looks like a lot of work ahead.. glad the fish survived.. what ever happened to the fish in the other pond was the O2 levels too low? not enough food? did they all die? I don't think you ever talked about them.
At least you aren't getting the 1 foot long Poisonous Asian Hammerhead Worms they are expected to get in Texas in the next flood this week.. seriously.. 1 foot long poisonous worms you can't touch and if you chop them up they multiply.. we can all be thankful we're not experiencing that heh.

Al…Hang in there. On a brighter note, at least for me, I am heading to the local annual Eastern Shore of Maryland Thresherman's Show on a parcel of farmland between Federalsburg, Md. and Denton, Md., the extended weekend of Friday, August 2 thru Sunday Aug 4th. Should be several antique / vintage farm implements for show or sale there…including the big old Steam Boiler Tractors fitted with PTO's Probably a few manure spreaders as well…..and ofcourse many different types of country and farm crafts. The ad is on-line for event details.
So sorry for the damage but Mother Nature can be so powerful. Glad you had minimal damage considering all the property it could have been worse. That one culvert you walked through was almost at your shoulder height or more. Mercy……
Thankful that it was not on your private road you use to get to town. Looks like the county will have a long time of repairing. Thank goodness it's still enough time for late summer and fall to repair things. WOW WOW so glad GIna's garden looks good as well as the pond!

I'll bet this wasn't even a 100 storm. Directing water properly is so important. I've never gone wrong with enlarging and doubling up from one to two culverts. Many a time I've looked out my windows grateful that I did that 20 years ago.
So glad the pond weathered the storm.
Anyone count how many times "culvert" was repeated? 90 total or nearly 3 per minute is my guess.
You need to pan for gold lololol one never knows money in your washouts.

Hello Al and Gina You guy's are really needing a couple of 42" Culver's where your Worst washout Are and pack them in with some good Clay Fill Dirt and Top it Off with some good Road Base and try and build your roads up about 2' higher than your original Road has already been and Top it All Off with some good Road Base !
