It's The Thing Meets Aliens…Underwater! Leviathan

There were a bunch of underwater horror/sci-fi movies made in the late 80s…most people remember The Abyss, but Leviathan is arguably my favorite. This one rips off Aliens and The Thing, features some great Stan Winston effects, and has an excellent cast that features Peter Weller, Ernie Hudson, Hector Elizondo, Richard Crenna, and more!

  2. Congratulations, you’ve finally made a reference that I don’t get(something about two sisters or something,I can’t remember the exact reference).Anyway,I Love this movie,so thanks,as always, for covering it in such an entertaining way.
Just when you probably thought you’d heard of and/or covered all The Thing ripoffs,I’m gonna hit you with one I never hear mentioned:Proteus. It’s directed by Biob Keen, and co-written by the man who wrote one of my favorite low-budget weirdness,Carnosaur. If these facts don’t pique your interest then I don’t know what to do.

  3. King: What have we got today, JR? I'm ready for anything?
JR: Today, we've got an Italian Alien rip-off set underwater. And the Alien turns into the Thing.
    King: Sounds like a blast!
JR: Oh, there are definitely some of those!
King: Hey, this is great! The sequel to Buckaroo Banzai that we always needed but never got!
JR: More like Robocop vs. the Alien Thing, but I'll let you have this one, King.

  4. This and Deep Star Six was really fun movies.<<< I think it was Deep Star Six I was so young and seen it only 3 or 4 times. Its the one I think there on a oil rig and pull up those Barnicle like clusters of eggs.

  5. I get this string of underwater monster movies confused – but I love them all!! Love that multiple killer sharks just happened to be there with a creature that apparently can surface immediately from a great depth without any consequences (cue sad dead blob fish). Even Godzilla took his time, and scared off any man eating fish! Just great, silly but I adore it (and the abyss, deep star rising, sphere etc). Thanks, Mike, I’m thinking of doing a movie night with this, plus Underwater now. Time for a rewatch!

  6. Does this movie have sea legs or is it all wet?
But how do they eat and breathe 160000 feet…never mind its just a show. I should really just relax.
Nobody knows nothing about Capone unless they want cement shoes.
It's Amanda Pays. Its a tenticle monster and its happy to see her.

  7. Why havent I watched this one? It has everything(and everybody) in it that I love to see. Or I watched it 30 years ago and wasnt that impressed because ALIEN and THE THING are better. I need to watch(or rewatch) it.

  8. I was really excited to watch this one as I loved Leviathan when I was a kid. At least I thought I did. Turns out I never watched it, and a bit of googling confirms the film I thought was Leviathan was in fact Deepstar Six.

    Ah well.

  9. The Al Capone's vault and Geraldo Rivera bit made me think more of the song Homer Simpson was trying to write until he wrote the Baby On Board song (which is obvious that's where the reference came from, but I didn't know that until now)
