It's Tarnished! Elden Ring Initial Thoughts & Gameplay (ASMR)

A calm, relaxing analysis of the bad & good stuff (in that order) about From Software’s video game Elden Ring, along with gameplay that highlights new features and other aspects. I forgot to mention Spirit Summoning in the video, which I feel is limited, though somewhat useful against difficult enemies and bosses.

  1. Maybe the intro is R.R Martins influences but wait till you fight moon queen unreal scenes beautiful fight boss , I guess the climbing is not really a souls bourne mechanic we don't want it to feel like other games , they added these winds that fire you up to higher levels on horse when jump into its a massive game that looks unreal on the eye but adding too many mechanics would take away from the souls feel to the game

  2. Comparing Elden Ring / Souls games to games like Assassins Creed or Dying Light or Horizon is just straight up ignorance. Critiquing Elden Ring for not having swimming or climbing when you were never able to in the first place is just astounding and complaining about a 2d intro seems petulent. I'm not defending the game, I have my own legitimate gripes with the game but your "review" is just confusing. What purpose does this serve other than what seems to be throwing a tantrum because you expected a game to be something it never claimed or tried to be in the first place. Yikes.

  3. Personally disagree with almost all of your points. Souls-like games shouldnt be compared to the likes such as Assasin’s Creed, etc. Still a great video and it was interesting to hear your points (even though i absolutely love this game.)

  4. I was hoping that you could do more with Dave and Corvus. Dave’s thrift shop was my favorite thing ever and it’s been a few years. I really hope I can see more of the deep one Dave and Corvus. They are my favorite characters. They are soft spoken and not whispering which is my favorite

  5. I don’t think this game was ever advertised as a major innovation for the souls series. It was simply taking the Dark Souls formula and putting it into a an open world, while incorporating aspects from Bloodborne and Sekiro. It wasn’t meant to completely shake things up with assassins creed style movement.

It’s very surprising to me that you are saying you are disappointed. Having played Bloodborne, dark souls, and demons souls, you should’ve had an idea of what you were getting. It seems like your own expectations were too high

Really don’t agree with the “dancing tree” as an example that they didn’t spend development time on the game. It’s certainly odd but it’s not THAT bad. It’s supposed to be storming and many of the other trees in the area look a lot better

You’re also the first I’ve heard complain about the lighting and graphics. This game is gorgeous

  6. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that opening cinematic was terrible. I even thought the voice acting sounded cheesy and forced compared to the others. Personally though I didn't care too much, I just shrugged it off. From Software's games starting with Demon's Souls are all of the caliber that they can speak for themselves when you play them. The intro cinematics have always been nothing more than window dressing to me, so Elden Ring's lackluster intro didn't subtract anything from my experience. They usually don't even make a lick of sense to me anyway until my second time playing, when I actually know who and what the narrator is talking about.

edit – I watched more of the video and I disagree about climbing. A lot of what these souls games are about is uncovering secrets. If you could scale walls you'd see something up on a ledge you want to get to and immediately be able to go there, but without that ability it gets the player to think more about the environment and look for a secret passage or some other way to get up. It's fun to grapple around like spiderman but I don't necessarily think mechanics like that enhance a game's design in every situation, sometimes a restricted approach can make the exploration more satisfying and rewarding. It's why I always got more enjoyment out of Dark Souls level design than games like Assassin's Creed or even Sekiro, but that's just my opinion on that.

  7. I know there are a lot of you out there that like the intro, but it's quite obvious to me that a 3D animated cinematic would be more compelling to 99% of players. You can call it an "artistic choice," but it was probably more of a financial choice.

How many tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars would it have cost to make the same intro in CGI? They probably cut those plans for budget reasons. I mean, they released the game with MASSIVE performance issues on PC, so it's clear they were operating under certain constraints. I wouldn't say they rushed the release, but they clearly made some compromises and oversights.

I stand with Ephemeral Rift that the intro was lackluster.

Having said all that, the game is fucking AMAZING and I'm loving it.

A 3D intro would have been nice, but I'm only going to spend 2 minuted watching the intro and hundreds of hours playing the game itself.

  8. One game that I find so interesting in terms of freedom is Assassin's Creed Black Flag, being able to travel to any island you want on your boat or even stop your boat wherever you want and have a swim is just so cool

  9. To be honest, I personally had a lot more fun finding a way around things than just climbing up them or simply swimming to them.

(P.S Who else is 10 hours into the game and only just got back from freakin Caelid? People are levelling up and getting horses and I'm over here like, "hey, still level 8 and only just got back from Hell itself" 😆)

  10. I personally don't like souls intros much… It feels like a lore dump and I'm not into it. My favourite intro was Bloodborne's. Just pure curiosity and bewilderment.

  11. Sounds like they just wanted to make open world Dark Souls. All the new additions are really just natural progression of Dark Souls design needed to fit the less controlled environment. Crafting is a progression of the weapons upgrade and item drop system, Stealth lets the player control AI aggro in the more open environment, mounts are added due to the larger environments, more advanced traversal is ignored because it wasn't in Dark Souls.
Though I'd wager the main reason there aren't climbing mechanics is because it gives them more freedom when designing the dungeon structures. Souls games love being cryptic and keeping the player uncomfortable, and they would lose some of that control if you could Tarzan all over buildings.
Uncomfortable is the design philosophy of these games. Most big budget titles try to be accommodating and play a bit into the power fantasy to some degree, but fromsoft id intentionally messing with you.
Also, at least in my experience, Japanese developed open worlds seem to have no problem with being restrictive. Might explain some of your issues when comparing Elden Ring to Western open worlds, just a different take on world design.
Of course, some things could be explained by rocky development or engine limitations. We may never know.
