Pirates of the Caribbean Construction Update – What’s New at Disneyland This Week?!

Pirates of the Caribbean is considered one of the most immersive attractions ever created for a theme park.

When Walt Disney originally designed the attraction in the 1950s, he imagined it as a wax museum and a walk-through adventure. However, after the success of Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, Disney and his team of Imagineers decided that Audio-Animatronics—Walt’s latest animation technology—was the most imaginative way to tell a rousing pirate story.

On March 18, 1967, Pirates of the Caribbean opened at Disneyland Park. Thanks to the highly detailed scenes, lavish special effects and memorable characters, the attraction earned rave reviews and has remained a beloved classic ever since.

But now as Disneyland has overgrown it’s tiny footprint it’s time to redesign and rethink how Disney Guests get inside of Pirates of the Caribbean through the latest construction project. Big changes to New Orleans Square as Disneyland Park sets up more construction walls across the land.

According To The OC Register

“Disneyland brings back up-close character meet-and-greet photo ops

Traditional up-close character interactions will return as early as April 18 to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

Disneyland visitors will be able to hug Mickey Mouse, high five Goofy and strike a royal pose next to Cinderella as the Anaheim theme park once again allows up-close meet-and-greet photo opportunities with Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters.

Traditional up-close character interactions will return as early as April 18 to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, according to the Disney Parks Blog.”

Disney Character Greetings Returning to U.S. Sites This Spring. isney entertainment experience that’s on the way back. As early as April 18, we will start reintroducing traditional character greetings at Disneyland. Character meet and greets returning to Disneyland soon!

Downtown Disney Construction

Downtown Disney connects the two Disneyland Resort theme parks with its three resort hotels, running from the western side of the property’s Esplanade to the Disneyland Hotel. West Street, which bordered Disneyland’s western side, was rechristened Disneyland Drive and lowered to accommodate a pedestrian bridge that connects much of Downtown Disney to the Disneyland Hotel and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel. A Disneyland Monorail System station sits adjacent to the pedestrian bridge.

The area has featured several shops and restaurants, ranging from popular retail brands to many Disney-operated shops including a World of Disney store running beneath much of the Grand California Hotel.

Downtown Disney has featured as many as 30 shops, but there have been changes due to announcements in late 2017. In July 2019, parking for Downtown Disney was relocated to south of the Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel (Simba parking lot). In addition, a pedestrian bridge linking the Pixar Pals and Mickey and Friends parking structures to the shopping district was opened on September 13, 2019. Open-air cafés, street musicians, sparkling boutiques, and soaring temples to everything Disney—this tempting pedestrian zone in Anaheim is as must-see as the resort’s two theme parks.

  1. The stairs were in the old Disney Vacation Club. Its very hard to find any photos from inside but from street view it looks like it may have just been a seating area.

  2. Absolutely wonderful great video loved it best construction video of DTD so complete nobody has gone behind and that slowing the video from the monorail was great really allowed to see what was done and the overall size that big building they removed looked so little on the ground had no idea how big it was that is crazy. I sure hope they put some more stores like they have a Disney springs and make it bigger I think the grass area is a bad idea they need to make more stores and things to do down there not waste space when DTD is already to small but excellent video really put into perspective what has been done. You have some really great video where you really show us the best way by going in deep with them I really enjoy them thank you 👏👏👏👏👍🔥🔥🤩😄

  3. Really enjoy these videos. I have a new appreciation of the work the Imagineers do.

Thanks for breaking it all down and sharing your insights in a easy to digest manner.

  4. Fascinating. Amazing to think the whole area west of the monorail line (Lego store) to almost Paradise Pier was the original DLH footprint before DTD. Can’t wait to see the next phase and hopefully Pixar Pier Hotel can be closer to the party. Great job as always. 🤘🏻1313

  5. I just want to say LOVE your channel. I was at Opening of Fantasmic and when they opened they had fences and grass between the walkways. As people stood on the grass and ruined it! So in second or third year is when they added the tiers. Also re stairs in amc that was the front of the theatre screen that was below ground level hence the stairs

  6. Interesting video. Thanks. It was years before they put in the walkway over/underpass to begin to avert the major crowd convergence point stalled in front of pirates. Was so happy that they did something about the horrible jostling. Now they have to do even more diverting.

  7. So this is the second time they’ve excavated the area in front of what was Sierra (now Adventureland, with a stop in between?) tower. Kind of ironic they’re going back to something similar to the original plaza. Idk about anyone else, but I miss the monorail cafe, the drugstore, the soothing fountain and the lap pool. In fact, I wish they hadn’t overhauled the dh at all. It was nice.

  9. Love you dear. And that is meant to be in all ways Disney. I can feel the love for the park dripping from your words. If I can figure it out I want to send two pics from my childhood dated early sixties. I remember so much from the times when the park was new. You keep on being who you are and loving what you do. And I will support you with that as long as I am here. Blessings.

  10. Just imagine, before Disneys California Adventure and Down Town Disney, you could look straight across Disneylands parking lot directly at the Disneyland Hotel. It was amazing!

  11. I loved the little snippet of sledding in Utah! I was born and raised there, but have lived in NC for 16 years. Love a little taste of home. Disneyland will always be my favorite, even though I’m so far away (literally on the opposite side of the country!) 🧡

  12. I wasn’t all that interested in DTD until now. Looks like a terrific change, & now I’m super excited to see it evolve. Last trip in Sept we sat outside in the AMC atrium, eating Earl of Sandwiches, funny to think nothing’s left. Stayed at Paradise bc the discount was great, and getting to DTD from there was super awkward. I hope this does help the whole flow of things.
