IT WILL RUN NO MATTER WHAT! We Have to Drive this WWII Jeep 2,500-Plus Miles!

Rick Péwé and I started doing the “will it run?” thing in about 1996. We’d go to a guy who had a dead vehicle, get it running in his driveway, and then road trip it on a huge adventure where we had to four-wheel along the way. We called it Dirt Every Day, or a DED Tour.

In this video, we’re doing it in Rick’s own driveway, wrenching on the virtually stock 1941 Ford GPW that we drove from Phoenix to Alaska 20 years ago. This time, we’re headed from Phoenix to Key West—but the “new” engine developed a brutal rod knock. So we did whatever it took to get us on the road, and that meant installing an engine that had not run in 36 years!

This video is Part 1 of this particular debacle. Look for Part 2 with the epic road trip!—D/F

  1. 1k comments in so someone else may have mentioned this already; I have to say after following Dave and Rick for some time now, knowing surely neither is strapped for cash, yet getting somewhat of a sense for these two, that blown apart pop-up shade is 'good enough'. 😂 It just makes me hope to run into both of them someday to thank them for all the laughs so far.

  2. I wonder how many running Jeeps you guys could make from all the parts around there.😂 Way back in the day thanks Freiburger I was in highschool and used to wait every month for the next issue. And where is Rick's Hawaiian shirt?

  3. My uncle was a wheat farmer in Kansas, for a hobby he would go to government auctions and buy whatever caught his attention. I grew up in California and would spend the summers on the family farm in Kansas and i remember one of his purchases really well, when i was 14 years old he gave me this old Chrysler hwy patrol car he bought at one of the auctions, on the dirt roads this car was some fun. Another purchase i really remember was a shipment of old jeep running gear's, and what i mean by that is in each create was the whole running gear from the radiator to the transfer case. He must of bought 30 of those things, about half were already rebuilt and ready to go back into jeeps and the others were removed and ready to be sent back for rebuild. Ijust remember in one of the barns he had these stacked four high, not sure whatever happened with them when he passed, i know he sold some along the way but he had a bunch of them. Now with the internet he would of sold them all in a couple weeks. That was some fun for a kid from California.

  4. Hell yeah. They killed Roadkill, and not only did 45 other revival channels appear, but now we get these two geriatrics forcing tech that outlived my grandparents to stumble clear across the country.

What a hell of a trip. Can’t imagine it getting any tougher than this lol, how do you top that? South America in a shopping cart?
