Could not agree more about your take on Abby. Ellie ultimately recognizes the futility of revenge, but Abby takes the acknowledgment a step further by re-creating herself in light of it. Abby becomes someone new, with new values and new ways of being. She’s actually a kind of Nietzschean hero – a beautiful new whole, comprised of old, bloody fragments. Ellie, in contrast, becomes a hollow shell with nothing to fight for. She (literally and figuratively) does not make it through the story in once piece. Comparing the two stories shows us that merely admitting one’s sins isn’t good enough; you have to use that information constructively and creatively.
i always wondered in a second playthrough did you keep your weapons and knowing the end did it change how you played certain sections.
This best part of the negative backlash about this game was that it was a brilliant litmus test to tell who is completely media illiterate!
The scene with Joel and Ellie talking at the end happened the night before he died, and that part killed me when I first played the game through.
I heard someone say "this is not a fun game" and I would agree. This story is very serious and tackles the ugly side of love that we don't like to see. Some people write it off and don't think it belongs in the gaming space and just want their games to be a game, not a playable movie. We will see how it translates to a new medium with season 2 of the show coming out soon. In many ways, the writing in this game had way more depth than it did in the first game. It's more grounded and true to human nature. So what if Joel didn't go out in a blaze of glory. Can you honestly say anybody goes out the way you wanted them to in real life?
Quite honestly as good as the first one is… it's not as thought-provoking, exciting, challenging and artistic as this. To me, TLOU2 is one of the boldest stories ever created and would put it up there with some of the greatest works of art ever made.
Yeah, Joel's death happened with the next day or two. Remember at the start of the game you had to go talk to Seth and you got those sandwiches because he is the one that got onto Ellie and Dina kissing at the dance. The ending scene was to just show that Ellie and Joel were on a path of mending, even though we last saw her earlier in the game ripping into him after she found out about what happened at the Firefly outpost. So for like 4 years Ellie and Joel had been on really bad terms.
Love both of your playthroughs of this game. Best Games ever in my book. 🙂 and your reaction to this game particular to the part 2 is my favorite from everyone I have seen.
I let the chained Runner's and Clicker's loose on the Rattler's. they worked well as a diversion and even took a few of those slaving lazy bastards out.
Joel was hard for 20+ years after the traumatic loss of his daughter in his arms AND the entire world collapsing, he turned into a monster that even turned his brother away. His time with Ellie softened him, his time in Jackson also did the same, and in the context of how Ellie was reacting to his actions shook him a bit, maybe he shouldn't always be a monster? Then blindsided by a girl he saves and has very little reason to doubt considering it happens immediately. Love this game so much, and I look forward to whatever Naughty Dog does in the future.
I have never experienced the emotions from this game, from any other form of media or frankly in real life. It's truly remarkable what they achieved with this game, and it shows me why I love video games and how superior they can be to convey some pretty unique to the media emotions. I don't think it's easy to feel a similar level of connection from a film for instance, than you can achieve like this from a game, physically controller the characters helps a lot to do this and of course masterful work with story, plot and mechanics.
dont waste your time on people who didn't like the game… they mostly lack empathy.
ps: the new start screen is abby's boat in catalina island… in other word she and lev made it to the fireflies.
ps2: you did read the letter in abby's boat… 9 out 10 reactors miss it.
tbh very few people didn't like this game. it has extremely high reviews. when it was first releasing a crowd of trolls tried to destroy its reputation but it never worked. they were trying to destroy its reputation even before the leaks because its too "woke". and when the leaks came they spoiled joel's death to everybody online to try to ruin its profits that way since the wokeness angle wasn't working. but basically everybody loved it anyway even with joel's death.
I like how it took you a while before registered that was in fact, Abby, captured by this new faction several months before Ellie arrived. 9.99/10 game dude.

I have really enjoyed watching your play through! This is my personal favorite game of all time. In my opinion everything in this game is just so well done. The game play is probably the best I’ve ever experienced and the story is so just good and is done in a way that makes me feel that the creators trusted the audience with something this complex. Very few things have ever made me feel the way this game did and I love the game more for that.

15:14 I never cried playing first game. I only cried after on rewatches after processing feelings about it. A part in the first game that always chokes me up is after Joel gets injured and Ellie is leading him out of the college. You can feel the fear and panic rising in the exchange:
Ellie: Well can you walk?
Joel: …yes…
Ellie: Then fucking walk!
I just got a feeling like that from this moment. Abby, for a moment, has hope and purpose again. And to know what awaits her is just sad.
More ppl loved this game than hated it. The ppl who dislike it are just louder.
This game is a masterpiece to anyone capable of empathy
Great game, fantastic storytelling. One wonders if we'll ever get a Part 3, or if the final image we have of Ellie is her walking away from the farm, not knowing where she goes.
However, the boat on the beach is on Catalina Island, facing Avalon. The implication is that the Fireflies are still there and Abby and Lev made it to them. So there's at least some form of closure.
