Island in the Sun and Weezer's Reinvention

This is the story behind Weezer’s Green album. After Pinkerton (the band’s followup to their debut Blue album and Buddy Holly) failed to reach the heights of it’s predecessor, frontman Rivers Cuomo vowed to do whatever it took to rebuild the band better than ever. This process would take 5 years of painstaking work, with many false starts along the way. But when Weezer returned with Island in the Sun and Hash Pipe in 2001, all expectations were surpassed. But was it worth the sacrifice?

  1. I think it's a testament to what remains my biggest problem with Green, that aside from stand out tracks like Island in the Sun and Hash Pipe it's just so boring and formulaic, and that a video that deep dives into the history surrounding the album spends more time discussing Rivers' depressive episode leading up to the album than the album itself. And frankly the history is so much more interesting than the album as well. It's like the Full Metal Jacket of Alt Rock. The making of is a more compelling story than the product itself.

  2. Weezer is one of the bands to ever exist. I’m very happy MarcButEvil made a Weezerful video about Weezer. Weezer is honestly one of the things in my life, Weezer consumes the part of my life. Weezer is love. Weezer is life.

  3. I would really love to see a video on the Red Album. Geniunely with this video's quality of sources, Red should be at least 40 minutes and we love MarcButEvil content.

  4. I wouldn’t be a Weezer fan if I didn’t nitpick so… I’m surprised you didn’t mention the 2000 Warped Tour. They played a bunch of the new songs they had been working on and planning for the new album before the label rejected them all. Weezer fans refer to these bootleg recordings as the “Summer Songs 2K” or “SS2K”

  5. Ive always liked The Green Album, but i think the leadup leading to Weezer's comeback is endlessly fascinating. I feel like it's lost to time in a lot of ways.
    Excellent work!
