6:00 the digital presets don’t sound like a Dumble amp in the room
6:08 a Dumble with an SM57 I think?
6:23 that’s not as smooth as thought it’d be?
7:30 the clean tones are as expected

8:35 an SM57 is going to be very bright in this position?
8:45 maybe this explains why it doesn’t sound like my ideal Dumble tone?
10:00 it IS a Dumble tone
10:37 I think it might be a challenge to record a Dumble amp well?
11:00 you can’t judge a Dumble without being in the room with one?

  1. i was able to play one at an amp show in ny along with a couple of tw models, believe a rocket & Liverpool, don't recall their pet names. the D was ok, but i believe it needed a tune up, preferred the tw models – in general, much closer to what i like. as for other d types – bludotone hpd had the best punchy room filling clean, they are way pricey as well.

  2. I, for one, thought the Dumble tones captured in Lee and Pete's NAMM video sounded like "ass", lol. I was actually quite shocked and wondered if one of more of the speakers was blown. Sounded nothing like Dumble tones I've seen heard in the wild (live), nor the sound I have in my head. I suspect you've captured many of the possible variables in your video here that made for such a stark difference. I also agree that both Lee and Pete have great touch and tone, so certainly not attributing anything to their playing.

  3. I’ve long suspected that Andertons quite heavily eq their vids and the namm videos back this up, none of the amps/direct solutions sound good in their namm clips. Try buying a direct solution and get it to sound like the Andertons videos out of the box…. You can’t and also notice that a lot of their demos have similar tones? Again, I suspect eq at play. On the Dumble thing, we love the Dumble players, not the amps, that combination of player pairing with amp playing songs we love to hear creates this myth that it was the amp, sure it played its part but it was just part of the eco system, all starting with the artist

  4. I think I'm right in thinking pete and lee played a "continuation of" amp, so a copy of a dumble.. so in the spirt of what dumble used to do so brilliantly, tailoring amps for gifted players this was not an original dumble but a clone of an amp made for an specific person.

  5. those andertons music guys? i wouldn't listen to them, D tier channel over rated and they don't even play that well. dude is vamping some basic zz top sounding riff in A, then tries to solo its so bad.. like really bad. it is the first time where i'll agree tone is in the fingers cause it sounds really bad. the amp sounded bad too sounds like a fuzz box in front of a jc120. jeez then the next guy plays and does the same A riff crap lmao. i also hear clipping in the recording here and there, they have that mic to hot or something, slammed against the speaker…

  6. Hey mate. I was at NAMM and visited the Dumble booth. I’ve played through one before and knew what to expect. It’s just an amp. A really nice amp but still, an amp. It’s not going to make anyone sound like Robben Ford unless they can actually play like him. Charlie Allen said the same to me when he tried Robben’s actual amp.

I’ll post a video about these Dumbles in the next few days when I get a chance, and did an interview with the guys at Dumble about them and their plans. Cheers Nick

  7. I think the Dumble phenomenon is way over-hyped. Larry Carlton through his Bludotone and Robben Ford through a Fender still sound like themselves with the same clarity and articulation. The legendary stories of Alexander Dumble building amps specifically for certain well-known musicians is probably the cause of most of the hype.

  8. These are not the times for cork sniffing. Not being obnoxious, I love the Dumble as much as anyone but in these digital times I find it hard to raise a lot of fuss for one particular amp when you can have hundreds at your feet (rack) that sound 99% as good

  9. well i worked in a music shop and sold my friend an orange tiny terror combo it sounded so smooth and really good, when he played his jazzmaster in it. Tried it when he left, and it sounded absolute fizzy an shitty with my playing style. 🙂

  10. I was shocked at the tone on Pete's Dumble NAMM vid. Didn't sound good at all. The Studio Rats guy did one in the same room, with an iPhone, and it sounded 1000% better. Not knocking Pete or Lee, they usually get great tones out of most gear; I'm thinking the recording setup they used must have been set up quickly, or something, because yeah, sounded shockingly "meh."

  11. Dumble would Taylor design each amp for the artist. So you can’t really put a specific “tone” to a Dumble. Whether your a SRV, John Meyer, Robben Ford, Joe Bonamessa, or Santana. The amp is going to be an extension of you as an artist.

  12. Those amps are not built by Dumble and most of the others have already been worked on by someone other than Dumble. There's a LOT more to guitar tone than just copying a schematic and sourcing the same parts. Dumble was a tone chef of the highest order and he shared his secrets with NO ONE. So they can capitalize on his name, sure but that's all it is.

  13. i think the smooth chirp is in the playing. you can make almost any high gain thing with mids do it. also the bass was waaaaaay too high on these clips, flub city. I played a real ods once and it was a bit flubby honestly.

  14. I'm not sure if they were just feeling pressure or something. I know I would if someone just plugged me into a dumble and said play. But I've heard them both sound loads better. At least to my ears.

  15. I think the best thing for people to do is find their own sound and try to find an amp or modeler or pedal that gets that tone. Just because it's a real Dumble doesn't mean it's going to sound great in your hands. A lot of people who had Dumble's got rid of them even before they were worth the crazy money their worth. I've posted this before but I'll post it again, I played through Robben's blonde Dumble and I really didn't care for it. I couldn't get it clean enough. I've only seen two and one of them I saw the inside of it and it was a complete mess. Full of black epoxy all over everything. Really gross. The black one that Robben had he didn't care for and that's why he sold it. There's a video on youtube where he states that. I've also heard Robben play though a Fender Super Reverb with a Zen Drive and it sounded just like his tone on 'Talk To Your Daughter.'

  16. Lee has improved a bunch over the last five years or so. Remember when he used to play that same riff almost every video? Then Pete started trolling Lee by playing it as well. Anyway… you can really tell that Lee has really put forth the effort the last "few" years.

  17. Every "good" video on a Dumble amp is 95% talking and 5% the most generic blues tone you've ever heard. No comparisons to any other amps ever, because the lofty Dumble would be sullied by being in the same room as an amp for lowly mortals

  18. Interesting, i thought the final point probably isn't something you would say about any other respected amp. It's not hard to get a deluxe reverb/jtm45/ac30 etc.. to sound true to our expectations with a simple sm57 and whatever interface. Strange it would be the case it could go that wrong with a dumble

  19. I’ve never played a Dumble, but generally have not liked any of the models I’ve tried and certainly none of the pedals. One of my favourite artists Carlos Santana sounds worse using Dumbles compared to the old Mesa’s and modded Fenders he used. The supposed Dumble sound has been cultured by SRV John Mayer etc and appeals to certain types of player which is fine, but frankly it’s boring to listen to and simply does not inspire me as a player.
